A baby fruit bat finds her world turned literally upside down after getting separated from her mother and adopted by a family of birds in this Scholastic film, based on Janell Cannon's award-winning children's book. A "warm and sultry forest far, far away" is the setting for the animated tale of friendship and self-discovery as Stellaluna attempts to fit in with Pip, Flap, and Flitter, three baby birds, and their mother. Thinking herself a bird as well, Stellaluna tries hard to obey the rules of the nest--which prohibit hanging upside down and flying at night--yet she is confused by her struggles to belong. While retaining the beauty and spirit of its namesake book, the film embellishes the plot with a few enjoyable characters, including a pair of talkative toucans and, later, a superhero spider who helps save the day. Poorly Written 
I love Janelle Cannon's children's books, so I'm puzzled as to why the author would allow her name to be associated with such a poorly written DVD production based on her work.
There are two musical numbers and they are are pretty awful. For example: A sad Stellaluna sings about being "gastrinomically lame." Ugh. I hate it. Two fancy birds sing to Stellaluna about her needing a makeover (double ugh) and use words like "diva" and "shake your derriere!" TRIPLE UGH. There's an option to play the story without the sing-alongs and I recommend doing this because then the story is tolerable. My son loves it but had I known about the content before-hand, I would not have purchased it. This mom has definitely learned a lesson about checking out content before buying.
I gave it two stars instead of one because there is some good educational information about bats in the other segment included on the DVD as well as a how-to video on making your own bat toy. However, I purchased the video for the movie, and the movie really disappointed me.

Stellaluna 
My 6-year-old granddaughter just loved this video. It was less than an hour in length, which is also a plus. Wonderful classic.

Think we've watched it a couple dozen times already
My son loves this DVD. He got hooked on the book in preschool and we thought he'd love the movie too. We were right!!! He loves singing along with Stellaluna and also checking out the bonus features. Wonderful story and great quality DVD.

Okey kids movie 
This is a fairly new movie been out for a little over two years. This movie should be fine for kids ages 6 and up some parts like when Stelluan body slams the owl while in mid air may be two violent and intense for kids younger than six. This movie just to let you now is drastically shorter than a normal animated movie which is ussually aboutn 65 to 90 minutes with the credits included . Even though this movie is less than 45 minutes it has cute characters decent musical numbers and good life lessons of accepting people for who they really are on the inside. This also has three new characters a super hero trazan like spider and a female parriot and male toucan. For those of you that loved the book you will enjoy this movie. This movie says beauty is really in the eye of the beholder.
