EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description From James Rollins, national bestselling author of Subterranean, Excavation, and Deep Fathom, comes a breathtaking masterwork of extraordinary adventure -- a gripping journey into a wilderness of astonishing mysteries as deadly as they are unfathomable.AMAZONIAOut of the world's most inhospitable rainforest, a man stumbles into a small missionary village. Within hours, the CIA operative and former special forces soldier -- tongueless, scarred, his eyes wide with terror -- is dead. But the most disturbing aspect of Agent Gerald Clark's death has his superiors in Washington baffled. Agent Clark had only one arm when he first came to the Amazon -- the result of a well-placed sniper's bullet -- but the photograph of him submitted by a Brazilian morgue shows a corpse with two upper limbs fully intact.Nathan Rand has made the Amazon region his home since his father led a scientific mission into the lush green wilderness and never returned -- the same doomed expedition that took Gerald Clark into the jungle. Now the government wants Nate to follow the elder Rand's trail, accompanied by a team of scientists and a phalanx of experienced U.S. Rangers. For somewhere in the dark, impenetrable depths of the most dangerous region on Earth there are mysteries that must be solved, no matter what the cost in money, materials... or lives. There are undreamed-of perils here in this breathtaking world where devouring insects rule, diseases unknown to modern science flourish, and rivers teem with hungry, flesh-eating predators. As Nate Rand and his party push deeper into the jungle, toward places no human has ever entered, they are haunted by an ugly truth that cannot be dismissed and, perhaps, will not be survived: They are not alone... and they are being stalked. But the threat of mortal hunters pales before the nightmare that awaits fourteen unsuspecting men and women, as each step brings them closer to an ancient, unspoken terror that even the native peoples fear. And as madness, terror, and horrific death descend upon the second cursed Rand expedition, those still living are forced to confront a power beyond human imagining -- one that can forever alter the world beyond the dark, lethal confines of the Amazon rainforest for better... and for worse. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 146 reviews)
| Good start, but... I must say that I really enjoy James Rollins' work. This book starts off strong, the plot is engaging, the animal attacks make you cringe. But the ending is downright ridiculous and very disappointing. November 27, 2008 | | Good, Imaginative Yarn... "Amazonia" is a story that is part mythology, part science fiction, part fact, part thriller, and the rest is some pretty fast-paced action! Rollins pulls off another good one, with this story of amazing secrets, lying deep in the Amazon jungle, where, quite literally, no man has ever gone before!
The basic premise of the plot is that something lurks in the Amazon jungle, something that has the power to spread the most dangerous contagion known to mankind, as well as to provide stem-cell-like regenerative powers to human bodies - a secret for which millions (of people) can be killed and billions (of dollars!) can be made. Naturally, it piques the curiosity amply, and the book quite literally grabs you by the neck, and the pace never slackens.
Like all such plots, there is a "good" team and a "bad' team in the same jungle at the same time, and the race is on - whoever reaches first will lay claim to the biggest prize of them all - or will they?
There are numerous sub-plots, which, in my opinion, are a little over-done by Rollins. Whats more, in trying to make realistic characters, he ends up making them paper mannequins, with transparent feelings, and cliched reactions. Not many surprises - at least from the humans in the story. However, this lack of surprises is more than made up in the form of nature's killer herds, whether it be in the form of deadly land-enabled piranhas, or the locator locusts, or 120-feet-caimans, or half-a-ton-sized jaguars...
The plot moves at a very good pace, never letting down, with incidents filling each and every single page in the book. However, the weakest part of the story was the climax - which, in my opinion, at first looked quite dragged out, and then ended before I could realize it!
Overall, a decent read, and will give you good company on a vacation.
overall rating: 3 / 5 October 19, 2008 | | Entertaining Read without Effort If you are looking for an entertaining read where you don't have to think very much, then this book might be for you. It has great detail but your belief system has to be put at bay when reading most of the science fiction, which there is more than needed; one man is fed by a tree root for almost a year. There was no mystery about any of the characters as they all turned out just as you thought they would when they were first introduced; none of the good guys turned out to be a villain. I would not classify it as a thriller since a lot of the plot was predicable, but it will keep your attention. October 12, 2008 | | Amazonia is "AWESOME"!! I read all of James Rollins books & Amazonia is my favorite!! What more can you ask for? He gives you action & adventure. Talk about a roller coaster ride of a book. Read this book you wont be disappointed! July 30, 2008 | | Amazonia? Amazing! Well this was the first novel by James Rollins that I read, and definately my favourite! However I have since read 7 of his novels and all were awesome!
Amazonia takes you into the heart of the Amazon jungle where it is easy to lose yourself in the pages! I loved how there was more than one aspect or point of view in this novel! It helps to add to the suspense and makes you want to just keep on reading!
A lost tribe, missionaries and extraordinary events will keep you turning the pages!
A must read!
Like me, if you had never heard of James Rollins before and you decide to read his books .... prepare to become an addict!
I just finished ''The Last Oracle'' and am anxiously anticipating his next novel!
Cheers James! To another job well done! July 18, 2008 | |
