CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 25 reviews)
| EL JUEGO DEL ANGEL I bought this book after I had read LA SOMBRA DEL VIENTO written by the same author. To be honest, I liked much more La sombra del Viento, and I think that El juego del angel is a book that in general is based on the same idea of the previous one and in some way is takes the conceptual arquitecture of the one and bilds the argument of the second. The truth is that I enjoied much more LA SOMBRA DEL VIENTO.
Christina dwe Gand November 13, 2008 | | I Didn't "Get" It (NOTE - I read this book in Spanish, it's due out in English in June 2009)
The book is beautifully written, there were literally parts I read two or three times for the sheer beauty of the writing. However, I just couldn't get into the story.
Unlike his prior book, "La Sombra del Viento" ("Shadow of the Wind"), which I consider one of the best books I've ever read, I was never engaged with the characters. I found the story to be too long.
I thought it was too slow, had too many characters, had a confusing plot and had an unlikable (at least to me) protagonist. And then, Ruiz Zafon went all magical realism on me. He completely lost me. By the end of the book I really didn't know what was going on, or why.
But again, the writing is just so beautiful that I pretty much finished the book just to keep reading the writing, not because of the story.
November 13, 2008 | | Sometimes too much ambiguity doesn't work This book is good but not great.
It is similar to "La Sombre del Viento" in many ways but different in others. I found the tone of this book to be darker than LSDV.
The build up is very good, if not just a bit dragged out at times. It keeps you turning the pages the same way that LSDV did and offers a compelling story, a great mix of likable characters, and plenty of laughs mixed with some occasional terror.
I feel however that Ruiz Zafón failed to effectively conclude the story. In these kinds of stories, it is difficult to find the delicate balence between how much to explain to the reader and how much to leave to the imagination. The character of the editor simply left too many questions.
It's worth the read but you might want to wait until it's out in paperback.
October 12, 2008 | |
