EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was a truly extraordinary Viking Hero. Warrior chieftain, awesome sword-fighter and amateur naturalist, he was known throughout Vikingdom as 'the Dragon Whisperer', on account of his amazing power over these terrifying beasts. But it wasn't always like that. In fact, in the beginning, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the most put upon Viking you'd ever seen. Not loud enough to make himself heard at dinner with his father, Stoick the Vast; not hard enough to beat his chief rival, Snotlout, at Bashyball, the number one school sport and Certainly not stupid enough to go into a cave full of dragons to find a pet... |

| Great book Great book for all ages, funny cartoons, it's for boys and girls.Buy the whole series, but make sure you read them in order. November 03, 2008 | | A Special Book What would you do if you had to go into a cave full of dragons? Well in this book Harry, Fishless, Bulldog, and Snoutalout had to go into it the cave and get a dragon.
When they get their dragon they have to train their dragon until the dragon can fish, hunt, and battle in two months or else their coach (Gobbler) will destroy them with his club. Later Harry taught his dragon how to fight, fish, and hunt because he used lots of effort on it. I also use effort on stuff like swimming, basketball, and tennis. Sometimes we both think that when something is really hard we think that were going to fail.
I liked that the author made funny pictures that always makes me laugh the author also made sharp edges on the pages witch makes it looks like it was ripped.
Ryan L. July 23, 2008 | | Wonderful way to hook kids on Chapter Books This entire series features Hiccup the Dragon, which is a character my students can easily identify with. The kids can't wait to hear about Hiccup's new adventures. The author has done a great job hooking kids on this series and introducing them to longer chapter books. Readabilty is about 4th grade level. February 27, 2008 | | A humorous world of dragons and Vikings A perfect book to appeal to young readers ages 8-10-- it features as its main character a young boy named Hiccup (son of the chieftain of the wild and fierce Hairy Hooligan tribe) and his pet dragon Toothless, both of them misfits in the rough and tumble Viking world. The author creates a complete world for these adventures, including a taxonomy of various dragon types and a rating scheme for their skills in combat, maps which detail the key features of the Hooligans' home island and their surroundings, and a philosophy that suggests that while deep, independent thinking is not always valued in Viking, or perhaps in any society, it may in fact be valuable, indeed, essential to our survival.
The author, who has said in interviews that some of her own children were, to her surprise, reluctant readers, pulls out a number of tricks to keep them interested in a book that is primarily text and to engage the eye. She uses varied typeface to indicate different languages, includes illustrations every few pages, and adds charts which rate the various types of dragons according to their fighting skills.
