CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 39 reviews)
| Worth while This book is very well written. It includes case studies and various experimental/anecdotal observations that seem to ring true. I believe controlling inflamation in MS needs to be a full time focus. Dr.Swanks program is stringent but has had a lot of success. May 20, 2008 | | My experience with this book and with MS OK, I will be straight with you: it is hard to really give much credit to any of these books peddling a free, natural, and healthy cure since the cause of MS is not really known, no one is really sure how it works, and there are no rules about how exactly the effects will manifest in someone since it is unique to everyone depending on where in your brain the lesions show up.
Whew, now I have the hard rules out of the way. These ideas may be hard to hear, but that is the way it is, so take all these miracle cures with a grain of salt.
Now for the good news. I was diagnosed almost 6 years ago. I read this book shortly after. I decided to try it just to see. It does help with the symptoms, there is no doubt about it. I could feel it pretty quickly after starting the diet and I still stay with it years later because I can still tell the difference if I get off the diet.
Has it changed the course of the disease progression? Who knows...maybe it has. I can tell you that I read a couple of years ago that the amount of fat in your blood affects how quickly things (nutrients, oxygen, etc) are absorbed into your brain. So it turns out that there is probably a reasonable, scientific explanation why this diet works.
My advice: this diet DOES at least help the symptoms and therefore may be helping the diease progression. Just read as much as you can. No one can be as dedicated of an advocate for you as you can for yourself. December 18, 2007 | | Good, but outdated Diet advises have come a long way since then. Yes, low fat is good, but there is more to that.
Besides that I found the book to be a little too technical and somewhat depressing. Words like " debilitating" and "degenerating" are abound and I just refuse to think of my body in those terms.
It went a lot in depth on what was believed to be the specifications on dis-ease, but again, research has come far since then November 27, 2007 | | Of Immense Help - Symptoms Gone For Decades I was diagnosed with MS in the decade of the 80's. I had several bouts of optic neuritis, and then an MRI confirmed the diagnosis of MS. I immediately got started in investigating ways to help myself and I came across the Swank diet. I changed a lot of my eating habits, concentrated on following the diet, and made this a way of life. I also investigated food allergies (I have a wheat allergy and avoid this as well, also avoid most dairy products) and incorported this into my diet and have followed this low saturated fat and more diet in general ever since. Decades later, in my mid 50's, my health is vibrant. I have no symptoms of MS, I am a full time university student in a very demanding program that requires a lot of my brain power and physical fitness, and I attribute a lot of my health to coming across Dr. Swank's first book when I was first diagnosed with MS. My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Swank! And shame on the MS Society for not giving credence to dietary options. November 11, 2007 | | Thank you Dr. Swank and John Pageler 5 Years ago, I was diagnosed with MS. I was not willing to give my life over to the pharmaceutical companies of the world, nor shut off my immune system, or give up my active lifestyle. I saw a Naturopath, who told me about the Swank diet, and I read a fabulous book by John Pageler called NEW HOPE REAL HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH MS (no longer in print, but availabe on his website). In his book, John talks about how the Swank diet kept him healthy, upright and mobile for 40+ years with the dis-ease. So, I bought the book.
I credit Dr. Swank and John Pageler and my Naturopath Dr. Paterson with being the backbone of my healthy a-symptomatic life! Everyone with MS should read this book. It helps more than you can realize. I only wish I could convince more people (who are on the drugs) to try it! September 06, 2007 | |
