EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Biomonitoring is a vital and rapidly growing field. Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates presents a state-of-the-art look at the use of benthic macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms) in the biological assessment of water quality in lakes and streams. The use of these organisms has increased dramatically in the past two decades in both North America and Europe; no other comprehensive overview of the topic is available. This book contains contributions from nineteen experts from North America, Europe, and Australia. Some chapters contain updates and syntheses of new information on previously reviewed topics, while others present the first detailed coverage of a topic. The book includes much useful reference material on the history of biomonitoring with invertebrates as well as work of a more practical nature. The design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of benthic surveys are discussed in detail, as are toxicity testing and field experiments. This timely and important book will be of interest to professional entomologists, invertebrate zoologists, and aquatic ecologists, especially those in applied areas concerned with environmental quality, preservation, and restoration. Those working in the growing environmental biotechnology field, or in government agencies responsible for monitoring drinking water, environmental quality, or marine habitats, will also find many new ideas here. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 2 reviews)
| Amazing book, terrible price This book is absolutely an essential resource for scientists and managers who are interested in biomonitoring techniques or programs. Each article is absolutely brimming with well-worded, well-organized, pertinent information. If you are willing to spend the time to read the entire collection of papers, you will have a firm grasp of most (not all) of the older and contemporary biomonitoring techniques. This book is geared toward freshwater biomonitoring, but can most certainly be applied with a marine setting. My only qualm is that the book is list priced on amazon.ca at $413CDN, but you can order it from amazon.com for $161USD...yikes! Buy it from .com, not .ca, sorry Canada! February 27, 2004 | | A "must-have" for freshwater biologists I first became familiar with this book as I was starting out in freshwater ecology (5 years ago). I am finishing up my thesis now and have had it checked out of the University library for the entire 2 yrs I have been here!! I am in search of a used copy... The authors are some of the top researchers in their field and the information they provide here is an excellent resource whether one is in search of toxicology information or statistics. I strongly recommend this book for all interested in macroinvertebrates and biomonitoring. June 24, 2001 | |
