Very sensible...  
McDougall's approach to nutrition is one of the most sensible one's I've ever read. It's inexpensive, available to everyone, and very do-able.

Fantastic advice  
McDougall rocks! As a vegan already, I didn't see what I could possibly be doing that would cause the weight gain I had been experiencing. Luckily, I came upon mcdougall, started eating a LOT more then I had been eating, excercising LESS, and losing weight. I hadn't realized just how fattening the effects of soy/tofu were on my body! And the tiny amounts of oil in every vegan recipe had always seemed necessary to make the food taste 'right". Well, guess what, when you stop eating oil, you realize oil and fat taste bad! It took a week of McDougall before any oils tasted like motor oil..yuck!
So far, I've lost over ten pounds, and everyone wants to know what I'm doing... and I've even found an easy way to do much of the diet when pushed for time- mcDougall cups! Finally, a sensible plan for all!  
No hunger, no thinking about food all day -- only positive results -- immediately. This doctor has been promoting this program for years, so why isn't everyone who wants to lose weight and get healthier jumping on board? Dr. McDougall should be on national television each and every day until all hear his plan. It's fantastic! The book is well written, logical and easy to follow. Five stars is not enough -- this should have at least ten stars to share how important the message content is.

1 OF THE 2 BEST WEIGHT LOSS BOOKS! EVER!!  
I make no secret that the 25 pound weight loss I experienced without counting a single calorie or EVER being hungry (cuz humans are not supposed to be hungry if they can eat right) came from reading and following this book. It's easy, cheap, and you feel great! Much easier than a bi-pass (geriatric or cardiac), insulin or amputation for diabetes, and chemo for cancer...diseases that can be caused and/or worsened by obesity. This book, and the Maximum Weight Loss Plan by Dr. Neal Barnard are the best kept secrets, IMHO. These docs ought to win the Nobel Prize. They aren't on the take from any company or industry and are sincere about helping hundreds of thousands over the years, for free because they care. They have no money-guzzling supplements or products or scams. Have seen many lose incredible amounts of weight using these two books and still recommend them all the time. For those like me who have difficulty losing weight, you have to follow the book's advice about ramping up your green & yellow veggies, eating salads as much as possible. This way of eating is very similar to other cultures of the world where they have no diseases of affluence. Including the legendary Olympic running Kenyans. Choose your weight. Choose ANY weight!  
This diet works. That is the first and the last word.

You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.

Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.

Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.

Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.

Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.

"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.

(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).

These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.

Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.

Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.

Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."
