EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This book features 121 case studies intended to provide an approach to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases. There are three sections: the first discusses the principles of diagnosing infections, using epidemiology, microbiology, and clinical medicine, while also discussing the principles of treatment; the second, constituting the core of the book, consists of case studies. A brief case scenario, designed to challenge the reader to work out the answer, is followed by a discussion of the case. The third section contains tables and lists about infectious agents and their epidemiology. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 2 reviews)
| A pure joy to read This book is a pure joy to read. It can be read easily at multiple levels, from student to generalist to expert. It makes learning and reviewing fun.
I am a pediatric infectious disease specialist and bought this book to begin preparing for my board recertification exam. It is of course not sufficient to prepare for boards and was not meant to be, but it is a wonderful review of the entire breadth of common and not so common pediatric infectious diseases through discussion of 121 cases. It is superbly written, emphasizing a deductive approach starting with history, physical exam, and has numerous high quality pictures of physical findings, gram stains, radiologic studies, histopathology, etc. The author is a superb teacher and importantly, the publisher has added value through superb layout and quality of the graphic design and photos. I cannot believe how inexpensive it is with such abundant and high quality photos and legible print. December 06, 2007 | | Superb & Unique This is a wonderful and unique book, a waltz across the wide variety of infectious diseases led by an experienced guide. Dr Berkowitz was one of my most gifted teachers during residency, and his wisdom and clinical acumen are reflected in this well-organized compendium of instructive cases. Not only are individual infections covered in detail, but the case-study organization lends itself to clearly illustrating concepts in pathophysiology and teh generation of differential diagnoses.
Both common (pneumococcal pneumonia, newborn sepsis) and exotic (botulism, actinomycoses) infections are presented, mostly from the author's own experience. There are rich, well-produced photographs and other illustrations throughout.
I highly recommend this volume to any pediatrician, pediatric advance-practice nurse or physician's assistant, infectious disease specialist, or anyone interested in the fascinating scope of worldwide pediatric infectious diseases. September 04, 2007 | |
