EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description
While exploring a sector of uncharted space, the U.S.S. Voyagerâ„¢ is ambushed -- and forcibly pressed into service as part of the Edesian Fleet in their war against the enemy Gimlon. The Edesian commander claims that the Fleet is fighting only to defend his people against a merciless invader, but Captain Janeway is suspicious. War, she has learned, is seldom so simple or black and white. With Chakotay and several other crew members held hostage, and the Starship Voyagerâ„¢ under the control of the Edesians, Janeway has no choice but to join the campaign against the Gimlon, only to discover that the enemy has developed a new super-weapon capable of destroying entire worlds. Soon the Captain and her crew find themselves fighting a losing battle in a war they never wanted! |

| Same thing over and over, tough technical problem that cannot be solved, then they solve it While moving through a section of unknown space, Voyager is attacked and forcibly impressed into the Edesian military. The Edesians are engaged in a brutal, to the death war with the Gimlon and they are losing. Lekket, the Edesian commander who has taken over Voyager, claims that the Edesians are fighting a war of self-defense against a brutal and merciless aggressor.
Captain Janeway relies on her knowledge of Earth history to generate skepticism, disbelieving Lekket as she understands that in a brutal war, both sides accuse the other of being the aggressor. However, Lekket has installed devices aboard Voyager that will kill her crew if she does not cooperate and fight the Gimlon. She does so and is able to fight the Gimlon super weapon, called the Marauder, to a standstill. When the Gimlon on the Marauder are able to recharge their primary weapon, they destroy an entire planet and escape.
When the Edesians separate the Voyager crew into shifts, the Gimlon capture Chakotay and his third of the Voyager crew. In their brief period of captivity, they learn that the Gimlon are as brutal as the Edesians claimed. Fortunately, Chakotay and his group are able to capture the Gimlon ship and use it as a weapon against the Gimlon.
This story did not keep my attention because the Federation personnel always managed to fix things at the last moment and after it appeared hopeless. Throughout the last third of the book it is a sequence of, "Can't be done", "Do it anyway", "OK we managed to do it at the last minute." The absurdity extends to their interaction with the Gimlon technology, even when it is not working. Some of this is acceptable, but after a few instances, the excitement is gone because you know that they will just be able to fix the latest problem.
August 21, 2008 | | Amazing This book starts off by drawing you into the story; making you feel like you are there and dosent let you go until the very end. The twists and turns in the plot keep you wanting more and the great representations of the crew makes it that much more worthwhile. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of the Star Trek series. January 08, 2004 | | Brilliant! I couldn't put it down. Voyager hadn't get any clue how to defeat their emeny which was so strong and kept beating Voyager up. I almost thought that they finally found the way to stop the enemy. Trumiph!! But nooo! It seemed endless defeat. I highly recommend that you read it. August 07, 2003 | | Absolutely fabulous! This amazing book starts with a bang of action and doesn't stop until the last page! The different plot lines are so well woven and the writing is clean and polished. The dynamic of the relationship between Paris and Chakotay is played out extensively. B'Elana and Seven do not get much print (hardly any, actually), but the dynamic nature of the rest of the crew makes up for this. Janeway's character is showcased and well drawn. Overall, I highly recommend this book. I've read it so many times, the spine has many creases. A great novel for the Voyager fan and novice alike! December 31, 2002 | | One of the best Voyager books to date! Cleary "Battle Lines" is one of the best Voyager books I've read so far. A good majority of the Voyager books have been, with few exceptions, boring and the same thing over and over and over. "Battle Lines" breaks that mold though. I went into this one hoping and praying that it wasn't that same old, same old and was pleasantly surprised. From the very beginning this one starts out heavy in action and doesn't stop until the last page. The author's came up with a very good plot and carried through with it very well. They nailed Janeway and the rest of the crews character's perfectly and came up with some interesting villain's for this one. If you're a fan of Star Trek and Voyager in particular, this is definitely one to get, unfortunately it seems it's already out of publication. It's definitely worth the money to purchase this one from someone through the Amazon.com marketplace. Thank you to the author's for this one, hopefully their "Maximum Warp" books are just as good or better. July 19, 2002 | |
