CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 1 review)

Nuanced and insightful
A nuanced and insightful study of a phenomenon that is difficult to define and given to internal contradictions. Mason's work is scholarly and well-documented, but also highly readable and full of pertinent and often amusing historical anecdotes. He traces the development of the ideal - and the reality - of the "English gentleman" from the Middle Ages and Renaissance through to the twentieth century, noting how each epoch made its mark on the multi-faceted concept that is both ridiculed and respected today.
