Product Description
In developing the electronic nose and biosensor devices, researchers not only copy biochemical pathways, but also use nature's approach to signal interpretation as a blueprint for man-made sensing systems. Commercial biosensors have demonstrated their benefits and practical applications, providing high sensitivity and selectivity, combined with a significant reduction in sample preparation assay time and the use of expensive reagents. The Handbook of Biosensors and Electronic Noses discusses design and optimization for the multitude of practical uses of these devices including:

novel use of surface plasmons
The text gives a broad explanation of the different types of biosensors currently in use. Along with descriptions of the many uses. The need is compelling. Especially where there are food or medical products that are to be ingested.

One of the more novel and recently deployed sensor mechanisms involves the excitation of surface plasmons by a sensor's beam of light. The latter usually being monochromatic; perhaps from a laser or LED. The plasmons exist at an interface between the container and the contained material (typically a fluid). The adhesion of different types of molecules to the container wall affects the amount of light absorption when the plasmons are created. A probe that is a very sensitive function of the molecules. Hence, if the absorption changes from a known, pre-calibrated profile, it can indicate presence of unwanted molecules. Contamination of the material. Nice non-destructive and non-invasive method.
