Product Description
It was the 1950s, and the violent one-hundred-year struggle for control of the Chesapeake Bay's oysters was still raging. Terry Noble was growing up idyllically in the fishing village of Oriole, Maryland, while his father battled poachers to protect the Bay's last oyster beds. A gunshot, piercing the river darkness, changed the family forever. Faced with the prospect of a hard life as a waterman, Terry chose another path. Supported by a determined mother and an eclectic cast of mentors, he fought to turn his dream into reality. Despite thieves, business setbacks, and injury, he perserved and managed to have fun along the way. The pages of this book are rich with the natural history of crabs, oysters and the men who caught them. Interwoven are delightful stories of boyhood scrapes, high school life, big fish and a host of watery escapades. Complimenting it all are the poignant moments with sick animals and the inspiring veterinarian who made them well. This heartwarming, often humorous tale, told with Chesapeake as its backdrop, illuminates a unique time and place while offering valuable child rearing lessons for today. It portrays a period before the upheaval of the 1960s, when less was given to children and more was expected of them.

Couldn't put it down.
I'm Terry's cousin and when I heard he was writting a book about growing up on the Eastern Shore, I thought, now who's going to want to read that? Now I know, anyone would. Terry did an amazing job on this, it is a real page turner. I didn't spend as much time with Terry as my brother did when we were growing up, I was the oldest cousin and a girl, but I was amazed at how much trouble he got into and nobody in the family knew.
Terry's descriptions of the hard life his family and others had at that time are right on. I learned so much about the oyster business I never knew. The one thing I did know and can still remember is how hard they all worked to make a living, especially after his father was wounded. I still remember the smell in the chicken houses and the heat. His determination to have a better life is totally understood and just how hard he worked for it is amazing.
Would recommend this to anyone with an interest in learning about the Eastern Shore, or to anyone who just wants a good read.

An engaging tale of gradually earning personal satisfaction and happiness
Former veterinarian Terry Noble presents Starting at Sea Level, a true-life memoir of growing up in the 1950s, when a violent one-hundred-year conflict over who could have Chesapeake Bay's oysters was still going strong. As a young man, the author was determined to make a better life for himself than the harsh way of the waterman; supported by his mother and positive-minded mentors, he worked to transform his dream into reality despite thieves, setbacks, and injury. From rambunctious boyhood adventures to insights on the natural history of crabs and oysters, ordinary high school life, and learning how to make sick animals well, Starting at Sea Level is an engaging tale of gradually earning personal satisfaction and happiness, highly recommended.

Page turner
I didn't expect a memoir to be a page turner, but found myself unable to put the book down because I wanted to hurry and discover the outcome. I really enjoyed the historic aspects but the father/son conflict and funny childhood stories were absolutely wonderful.

STARTING AT SEA LEVEL
Having moved to the Eastern Shore a few years ago I was interested to discover the history and culture.
Beginning with the LAST WATERMAN-Lawson and continuing with CHESAPEAKE-Michener,I felt acclamated but still felt something was missing.
STARTING AT SEA LEVEL- Noble, helped me to connect on a more intimate level as the authors memoirs reminded me of experiences growing up in New England and to appreciate the universality of the seemingly ordinary events that go almost unnoticed but make us unique.
That uniqueness is brought to life fleshing out the character ,personality and goegraphical disticntness of the Eastern Shore
as LIONHOUND- Kjelgaard and novels by Jack London did for their regions of the country but in living, real kind of way.

B. Bozman - bayboz
This is a very interesting and enjoyable account of the son of a waterman growing up in a small seafood community on the lower eastern shore. His determination to change his lifestyle makes for a complete story.
