But he's determined to prove himself on the long, dangerous winter migration to Hibernaculum, millions of wingbeats to the south. During a fierce storm, he loses the others and soon faces the most incredible journey of his young life. Desperately searching for a way to rejoin his flock, Shade meets a remarkable cast of characters: Marina, a Brightwing bat with a strange metal band on her leg; Zephyr, a mystical albino bat with an unusual gift; and Goth, a gigantic carnivorous vampire bat. But which ones are friends and which ones are enemies? In this epic story of adventure and suspense, Shade is going to need all the help he can find -- if he hopes to ever see his family again. |

| Heartwarming Tale of Courage and Perseverance Shade, the Silverwing Bat, has three strikes against him. One, he's smaller than other bats his age; two, he has no father, and, three, his overpowering curiosity to see the sun results in the destruction of his colony's home. During their migration, a fierce storm forces Shade far off course from his mother and their colony. He lands on an island, where he meets a young Brightwing bat named Marina who's been ostracized by her colony for wearing a ban placed on her by humans. Together, Marine and Shade experience adventure and danger on their quest to find Shade's colony.
Kenneth Oppel's fantasy novel, SILVERWING, is a heartwarming tale of courage, perseverance, being different, and struggling to answer some pretty deep questions about how the world works, and how one survives all types of obstacles.
My son read this book with his sixth grade class, and liked it enough to want to read the book again a year later. The narrative descriptions are vivid, and many young readers will relate to the range of emotions a young bat experiences in his struggle to survive in a confusing and frightening world.
July 14, 2008 | | A Good Read When Shade and the rest or his bat colony have a migration, he gets lost in a storm. Then he finds Marina. Before you know it there on a journey. Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel was a brillinant book because it made me realize that respect should be an important thing to people and that taking risks is sometimes not a bad thing. I would rate the book a 4 out of a 5 because I didn't get "into the book" like I do others. I think if I really liked bats as much as Kenneth did I would rate it higher.I recomend this book to the people of ages 8-15 or 16.
