EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Book Description When attorney Jeffrey N. Gingold "misplaced" his wife on the living room couch, then became lost while driving just blocks from his home, little did he know that he was experiencing a common symptom of multiple sclerosis: cognitive difficulties. Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis is a courageous and compelling personal account of one man's struggle with this aspect of the disease. It was written for the silent majority of people with MS who must deal with these same cognitive symptoms which often go unrecognized and are difficult for others to understand. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society estimates that over 400,000 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and there are millions more worldwide. Conservatively speaking, half of them will encounter varying degrees of cognitive difficulties. Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis brings this hidden disability into the open. It is an essential resource not only for individuals coping with multiple sclerosis, but for their families, caregivers, physicians and therapists. |

| great for ms'ers but ok for neuropsychologists i thought that this book was terrific help to me in reading how someone else with ms experienced and dealt with ms' cognitive problems. yes, virginia, the cognitive problems are here and real... the emotional problems aree also real ... the brain is divided into sections, for which ms lesions can affect any part of our daily functioning!!! i felt like i'm not alone in this struggle ... i was disappointed that it didn't delve into greater detail about visiting a neuropsychologist and those tests and how neuropsychologists might interpret those reports and how he, if he ever did, go through the process of claiming disability ... i guess those are the limitations... overall, an outstanding book, very well written, and an excellent addition for anyone who suspects that their loved ones with ms might have cognitive problems (although i think that rossalyn(?)kalb's book is better for helping caregivers comprehend some of what we're going through) but this book gives those of us dealing with problems some hope and a feeling that we're not alone. March 05, 2008 | | A Book Helpful to Anyone Facing the Challenges of a Disability This book touched my heart in multiple ways. Though the topic dealt with one man's struggles of receiving a diagnosis of MS and him learning to accept and live with the affects this disability has on his particular mind and body, I found his courageous story to be relative to my own situation. I do not have MS, nor do I have a family member with MS, but I do however, have a 10 month old child with Down syndrome. The touching story Jeffrey so vulnerably and honestly shared with us in his book left me feeling as though we lived in that same world of luxury, just to have it all come crashing down in a single moment. Though every disability takes on its own identity for each individual, there are so many similarities. The disabled person is seen as different from what the world perceives as "perfect" and is faced with challenges and struggles only those who have been through it can understand. I'm so thankful to Jeffrey for sharing his life with us and opening the door to so many others with disabilities by stating the importance of educating and supporting one another. I found his book to not only be his personal story, but to be a guideline we all can follow when faced with a medical diagnosis or uncertain future. His book affirmed my diligence in always staying on the cutting edge of my daughter's care, treatment, education and support system. There is so much to know and learn about living with disabilities and I believe it is critical that we as those individuals (or those living with those individuals) use our voice to help educate. Before having a child with Down syndrome, I never knew children with Down syndrome not only faced cognitive delays but also physical delays and an entire spectrum of medical complications. Without seeking out books, resources, organizations and other support, I'd still be left in the dark. Thank you Jeffrey for using your voice to share your compelling story, for educating others on not only the physical, but the somewhat unknown cognitive affects of MS and for your will to live life to the extent of the gift that it is. Thank you for proving to us you have MS, but that it doesn't have YOU!!!! February 19, 2008 | | Facing the Cognitive Challenges of MS I was disappointed with this book which had been recommended by my local MS Society. I felt it was more like a review of the writers' personal story and did not give much practical advice. I also did not appreciate his judgments about those who choose not to use the current medications for MS, the old and tired "I have MS, it doesn't have me" line, and his complaining about anyone he felt didn't help his problem. The only aspect of this book that I found useful was the author's descriptions of the problems he has due to cognitive impairment but there was way too much useless information in between. August 19, 2007 | | Treatment of a topic often ignored This is a sensitive, well-written book which tells a personal story of the struggle to deal with some of the most challenging aspects of MS: memory loss, confusion, and difficulty thinking and working. If you have MS and are struggling with these issues, read this book! August 04, 2007 | | If you thought you were losing your mind... As someone with MS, I often experience cognitive difficulties, which are quite scary. For example, I've driven down roads that I've been on countless times and find that I can't recognize where I am. The author has similar experiences. I'm grateful to Mr. Gingold for telling his story. I know what I'm experiencing is "normal" for MS. If you have similar experiences or have trouble explaining to family and friends, this book could be useful. Just keep in mind that MS is different for every 'body.' Let your medical team know your cognitive issues and don't be satisfied until you get the answers. Good Luck. May 14, 2007 | |
