CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 1 review)
| Scientific advancement has not rendered this Lucky Starr story absurd This story about David (Lucky) Starr has weathered the ravages of scientific advancement better than the others. Advances in knowledge of the conditions on other planets have rendered many of the plot elements of the Lucky Starr adventures incorrect, which diminish the story. There are no oceans on Venus or breathable atmosphere on Mars. In this case, the environment is the asteroid belt, so there is very little in the story that has been rendered scientifically inaccurate.
A well-organized organization of pirates is operating in the asteroid belt and attacking shipping. Their ability to strike and retreat and avoid conflict with government forces has made it critical that something be done. Lucky Starr comes up with what appears to be a plan to take out some of the pirates. An unmanned rocket ship that is armed to explode is to be launched with the expectation that the pirates will capture it. Once it is inside the pirate's lair, it will detonate, destroying the lair and all pirates inside it.
However, Lucky stows away on the ship and is captured by the pirates. Using a measure of cunning semi-honesty, he is able to survive, obtain a ship and return to safe territory. The story is very much a mystery, as Lucky and his colleagues try to unravel the enigma of how the pirates are organized and who is the Boss of the organization. Naturally, Lucky is successful, even though he goes contrary to the wishes of his superiors.
Asimov has no equal in writing science fiction at any level. Although his Lucky Starr stories have been largely rendered scientifically absurd, the style of writing keeps them well worth reading.
