EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description What causes multiple sclerosis? When will there be a cure?
Dr. Howard Weiner has spent nearly three decades trying to find answers to the mysteries of multiple sclerosis, an utterly confounding and devastating disease that afflicts almost half a million Americans. Curing MS is his moving, personal account of the long-term scientific quest to pinpoint the origins of the disease and to find a breakthrough treatment for its victims.
Dr. Weiner is at the cutting edge of MS research and drug development, and he describes in clear and illuminating detail the science behind the symptoms and how new drugs may hold the key to “taming the monster.” In Curing MS, Dr. Weiner teaches us the “Twenty-one Points” of MS, a concise breakdown of the knowns and unknowns of the disease; tells stories from the frontlines of laboratories and hospitals; and offers a message of hope that a cure can—and will—be found. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 18 reviews)
| Must read if you or someone close to you has MS. If you have been recently diagnosed with MS. This is the first book you should read. If you have MS and have not read this book, you should.
I've had MS for over 20 years, and keeping up with all treatment options can be difficult. This book will give you a solid foundation for understanding what makes MS "tick". There are many miracle cures, claims based on lack of sound scientific proof for MS. This book helps you get through all of that "noise" with clear information on the disease. Reading this book will help you understand MS, and if so, be a more knowledgeable patient.
This book is very informative about the history of MS treatment and research. Its causes, current reatment options, and research. Often frustrating for those with MS, is how long its taking to find a "cure". This book explains the road of research and treatment. There is some medical jargon, not daunting, it is well written for the patient and medical professionals.
Tips: For quick reference, keep an index card handy to write down some acronyms used throughout the book. You don't really need one for this book, but I have found having my paperback copy of Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary handy, helps during reading books and articles on any medical condition.
May 03, 2008 | | Well satisfied Curing MS I haven't had a chance to read it yet but I sure would recomend the book company order from. They were fast the condisstion the book came in was great. December 31, 2007 | | MS and diet connection, history of MS, food allergens, Dr.Roy Swank, Robert McDougall, Mr. Ashton Embry..the true leaders I was diagnosed with MS back in 1996. Yes, MRI confirmed lesions.
This past Sept. /07, symptoms of rash, joint pain plagued my body.
Why?
I recall my childhood and the itchy rashes between my fingers/toes.
I start doing research about gluten.
I go on a gluten free diet, rash/joint pain diminish.
I continue to get spasms at night. WHY? Could my spasms, vision problems, dizziness be connected to my diet....??
YES...Multiple Sclerosis and diet are connected.
I did NOT believe it until this Sept/07
I dismissed Dr. Ashton Embry's work back in 1996. He cured his son of MS and has a wonderful web site: [...]. There is a movement to help people who are ready to listen about the connection between MS and diet.
At [...], etc. Dr. Embry does NOT want any money nor is he back by any drug companies.
There is a campaign at the above web site to do scientific research on the connection between developing MS and ingesting problematic foods.
I keep a food journal, like so many who have suffered in the past have done and who have been dismissed by the medical community. For example:
Dr. Roy Swank, a leader in the connection of the omega oils and being healthier, realized the importance of eating fish etc..and olive oils
Robert McDougall, a man who suffered back in the fifties, who kept a food journal and eventually got out of his wheelchair.
Dr. Ashton Embry, PHD< who cured his son and now has web site with a growing number of people who are healing, like me, by listening to their bodies and changing their diets. The UK is ahead of the USA and back Dr. Ashton Embry's work and web site...
The MS Recovery Diet, by Ann Sawyer and Judith E. Bachrach, both diagnosed with MS back in 1996 and 1997, who confirm Dr. Roy Swank's work, Dr. Ashton Embry's work and Robert McDougall's story. Ann was in a wheel chair, but now she is living her life symptom free. She was on a full disability. Judith lived with MS for 39 years, and her functioning has improved dramatically since she began the MS Recovery Diet in 2006.
Their book and Dr. Embry's web site are my new bibles.
You see, I am healing, thanks to the above people, not to my neurologist.
I am no longer injecting myself every day.
Good Luck in your journey
Listen to your body and feel free to question your physician or choose a physician who is aware of the above names and believes in a diet connection October 22, 2007 | | Book Review I have had MS for over 25 years and read a lot of books and articles. This
was quite informative. A lot of information, personal stories, very readable. The medical community is still trying very hard to find an answer to this crazy disease. October 13, 2007 | | clinical, but informing Having had MS for fifteen years, I was glad to read something a little more informing than the usual "stuff" I was able to learn things that I was not aware of. This book can be quite clinical and boring for the newly diagnosed. Very interesting case studies on actual patients... shows the large range of difference in this disease with each person!
