If you - just like me, looking at this advert of a B/W screened Kindle even without back lighting - are a bit skeptic at first and maybe having tried too many other devices as a reading platform and ended up dismissing them all for various reasons, the Amazon Kindle stands out as the first ever real alternative to reading a printed book even in sunlight. And it is Brilliant.
The wireless phone interface and the intuitive interactive user handling make this product a perfect reading platform. Combined with the latest firmware upgrade- just released - Kindle moved from a 4 star to a +5 star device now also reading you own pdf files. The black ink screen and the readability under any kind of light are amazing. You read for hours and hours consumed only by the plot of any good book or text totally forgetting the media used. Portability is superb and battery life excellent and combined with the global mobile phone link to Amazon, no book is farther away than 2-3 minutes browsing and a 1-click purchase and you are reading it.
The only real drawback from a European perspective, is the lack of online browsing of any web as possible currently only in US and using the device for purchasing reading materials in local languages. I feel confident though that this will change as local potential number of Kindles increase in numbers and the revenue becomes tempting for the local publicers.
And a good advice is remember to purchase a reading light and a leather-wrap - with this you have the best holiday gift of the year. May you enjoy this mobile technology as much as I do.
Lastly: Give Europeans the web-browsing facilities too!

I bought the Kindle for my wife, a 25-year veteran librarian. I thought it was the dumbest thing ever conceived by person-kind -- a cultural tragedy in the making that could perhaps surpass the loss of Alexandria's ancient library. She absolutely disagrees, and LOVES HER KINDLE. It does NOT replace books -- those who need to feel and smell books (like she does) will still need them. But coming from one whose life is books and media of all types -- the Kindle is deemed a winner!

My first ereader and a great product. Easy to use with a great screen and portability.
As yet i have not found a fault with this reader.
I also like the fact that you have the excellent service,product range(books in this case) and support behind this product with Amazon.
I recommend this ereader highly.

my present of the e -reader is the best thing i have ever had, i read a lot and im 67years old with arthirits in my hands and not to have to turn pages is heaven and to not have to take heavy books out in my bag is fantistic duying books is much cheaper and helps my pension go thurther and page turning at night doesent wake my husband up its a godsend thank you very much
