I am an avid reader, the KINDLE is the BEST item I have ever purchased!! I can download books in a flash. Works very well in the dark or the brightest sunlight...I LOVE it!! Free shipping was an added plus. I am so happy I selected the Kindle from Amazon.com!

I bought a Kindle, excited about the idea of having books with me at all times, along with the possibility of having newspapers and magazines downloaded automatically. Here is what I found:
Pros: Practically instant on. Text very easy to read with no flicker at all. Automatic download of my newspaper happened every morning automatically. Well designed interface, easy to navigate. The Kindle remembers where I was in the book and gets me back there when I open the book. Thin and elegant and is a good size.
Cons: Newspaper and magazines are only partial, with practically no images or graphics. If I buy the New York Times or Time Magazine, I want the whole thing. Battery life is very poor even when the Kindle has wireless turned off. I would have expected that when it's off it practically uses no battery. But just sitting in my computer case for a few days, and the battery is drained.
Result: I returned it. Thank you Amazon for your amazing customer service.

I have to say that the Kindle 2 is a cool device. Every morning I read the NY times, I get Time magazine uploaded weekly. I have about 10 books loaded-some were free some under $3. It's a great way to get back into reading.

I recently got the new Kindle after my old one got left on a plane. I like the controls and form factor of the new model much better than the old. It it thinner and easier to hold and pack. Navigation is still a bit clunky. That is the only thing holding me back from giving this five starts.

Although this is sold as the 'International' version, it is shipped with a flat pin (US style) USB charger.
So it is tempting to discard this and use a UK USB charger, which seems logical as USB is supposed to be a universal standard.
However I urge you not to do this, as it transpires that the Kindle USB charger has a different pin configuration and most non-Kindle USB chargers will cause your Kindle to malfunction in the following ways:
1: Despite the fact that the charging light indicates that it is charging, the battery actually discharges when connected to a non-Kindle USB charger.
2: The keys become very slow and unresponsive.
The good news is that performing a reset can rectify the fault. The bad news is that you will have to carry a US to UK adapter which increases the mass of the charger by about 4 times.
I think it is very remiss of Amazon to actively promote and sell this product in the UK, while shipping it with a US charger.
But it is even more remiss of them not to warn users that 'standard' USB chargers will cause it to malfunction, especially as popular wisdom tells us that USB chargers are interchangeable.
