Jean Carper Reveals the Natural Medicines That Have Been Proven to: Lower Your Cholesterol Open up Your Arteries Regulate Your Heart Relieve Depression Overcome Anxiety Fight Sleep Problems Regenerate Your Liver Restore Your Memory

Amazon.com Review
For a growing number of Americans, the time for alternative medicine has come . Miracle Cures, written by CNN's former senior medical correspondent, highlights several of the most exciting natural remedies currently under investigation. There's St. John's Wort (also called hypericum), which has proven effective in combating depression; gingko biloba, a circulation-enhancer that retards Alzheimer's and other age-related memory problems; grapefruit fiber, which combats cholesterol; and many others. All of the compounds and alternative treatments listed in Miracle Cures are regularly practiced in Europe, Asia, or both. So why aren't they used in the United States? Carper points out that since "nature owns the patent," there's little financial incentive for American pharmaceutical companies to investigate natural compounds. Secondly, most American doctors are simply unaware of the testing that has been done on these techniques; most research has been done by non-English speaking physicians and written up in foreign journals. Responsibly toting up the risks and benefits of each, Carper is hoping for a sensible integration of natural remedies into American medicine.

This book's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses by Donald E. Bartell (Salem, OR) 5 Stars
February 15, 2009
In terms of research to back up the author's claims, this book is way ahead of most of the material on natural remedies. Substances reported on: Bee Pollen, Celery Juice, Cherry Juice, Coenzyme Q-10, Echinacea, Feverfew, Fish Oil, Ginger, Ginkgo, Glucosamine, Grapefruit Fiber, Grapeseed OPC, Kava, Kudzu, Licorice, Omega-3s, Peppermint Oil, Pycnogenol, Saw Palmetto, St. John's Wort, Milk Thistle, Valerian, Vitamin C, Vitamin E. In the chapter on cancer, very brief mention is made of the following: antioxidants, beans, bioflavonoids, broccoli, cabbage, coenzyme Q-10, dong quai, echinacea, fish, fish oil, fruits, garlic, genistein, high-fiber grains, lentinen, a low-fat diet, a macrobiotic diet, nuts, seeds, selenium, shiitake mushrooms, soybeans, soy protein, tomatoes, vegetables, vitamins A, B6, C & E, wheat bran. But first of all, some reasons not to read this book: There are only about a dozen pages in it that directly relate to cancer, and the title promises more than it can deliver. The author herself states that these are not miracle cures in the sense that most people might understand. Not to be too hard on the author, a further shortcoming of the book is that a substantial amount of space is devoted to anecdotal reports of complete cures of the various illnesses covered, whereas the research materials offered in evidence only show that, overall, some (OK, sometimes considerable) benefit has been observed in patients who have used these substances. And the research studies quoted are mainly from foreign countries, which makes it difficult for American authorities to evaluate. There is an impression among medical professionals here that foreign research is not as reliable. Lastly, whether these substances are all that new is in question. Most have been in use for ages. And although most of the research cited is from the last few years, some of the references date back a decade or two. Nevertheless, this book's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. The author has sifted through a vast amount of material on hundreds of substances, and winnowed this down to those that have been found effective, as documented by scientific research (in most cases), for 21 particular illnesses. The first few dozen pages have extremely interesting and informative insights on the controversy over natural vs synthetic products, and the struggle between the medical establishment and the proponents of natural remedies. She makes an excellent case for looking into natural substances, and provides the reader with references to extensive research that supports the use of each substance presented, as well as references to natural substances in general. One particular reference should be especially useful, but pricey: $[...]: The German Commission E monographs [sponsored by the German government], the American Botanical Council's English translation of 410 monographs on 324 herbs recommended by doctors in Germany, with dosages, approved uses, contraindications, and side effects. [Note: Commission E is Germany's cousin to the FDA] The bottom line: well worth reading.

Good reference if used in conjunction with M.D. advice. Even herbs can kill you or make you sick if you aren't careful.

Easy read with research info. to back up claims by C. Schwartz (West Palm Beach, FL) 5 Stars

I was extremely impressed with this book. It is very easy reading. Like other reviews said, there are only a few pages to each items. The author, I believe, is a medical research journalist. Her premise for this book was weeding out what really helps vs. those "cures" with no real substantiation. For example,CQ10, she gives the name of studies names of MD's. Her research is NOT just annecdotal. My mother has congestive heart failure and was not doing well. Her cardiologist gave me a pretty gloomy report about her condition and I thought her days were extremely limited. After reading the book, I spoke to her cardiologist about CQ10 -400 mgs. a day. He didn't believe in it but said if I wanted to waste my money, go right ahead. Well, about two months later, he called to tell me her heart was a lot better. Hhhmmm? Yes, she was on his prescription meds but that treats symptoms. The book mentioned other countries, gave the name of a heart specialist in CT. In other countries, I remember Israel as one, CQ10 is standard treatment. The author, Carper, even gave the name of a cardiologist in CT who had wonderful results with CQ10. To me, this book was not the usual hype. It has the documentation I needed. Another example, St. John's Wart for depression. In Germany herbs are studied and every doctor and pharmacist is trained. There has been extensive research. Germany certainly is not 3rd world slouch in medicine. They prescribe St. John's Wart over Prozac. It's just as effective without the side effects. Before you use any supplement, if you're smart;you go online and do some homework but in this book, Carper has given you the places to turn to back it up and has recommended the best of the herbal, vitamin cures. Doctors are not trained in this area. My mother's cardiologist was honest and admitted it. I was so pleased with Miracle Cures that I'm ordering her food book. Hope this helps.

Tired anecdotal information by OttofocuS (Dollars, Taxes) 1 Stars
October 29, 2006
Please don't have false expectations or waste you money on this book before you at least look it over in the local bookstore or library. This book is full of fairly elementary information on a wide variety of herbals. Containing one to three page entries on a wide variety of herbal remedies such as ginkgo, sol palmetto, the wonders of cinnamon and the like. Anecdotal tales that have been around for years nothing beyond what the average salesperson at your local health and nutrition store might tell you. This book's contents hardly qualify as, "new scientific discoveries." Easily as much or more information is available through your favorite search engine. If these things truly were miracle cures the information could not be suppressed, these herbs didn't land in Roswell, they have been around for hundreds of years. If these miracle cures worked beyond a psychologically uplifting level all of us would know far more people who had been cured by herbs than we do those who have had chemotherapy.
