EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Until the phone calls came at three o'clock on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily is dead—shot with a gun her beloved and devoted Chris pilfered from his father's cabinet as part of an apparent suicide pact—leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew. From New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult—one of the most powerful writers in contemporary fiction—comes a riveting, timely, heartbreaking, and terrifying novel of families in anguish and friendships ripped apart by inconceivable violence. |

| Best Book I've Read in a Long Time by Mari Anna Wahr (Gaylord, MI USA) 5 Stars October 26, 2009 This was the first book I read by the author, and the start of a long love affair with the books of Jodi Picoult. I read all the time, and rarely do I find a book that moves me as much as this one. Although the subject matter is quite sensitive, and I did not agree with all of the book's premises, I could not put it down. I cried, I laughed, and I lost sleep. I've gone on to read everything else Ms. Picoult has written, but this book remains a particular favorite. She is an author that I find extremely compelling, even controversial, as her subject matter touches on highly polarized issues. Her character development is first-rate, and I cannot recommend this book enough. You won't be sorry when choosing this book.
| | touching and winsome by C. Dela Rosa (California) 5 Stars September 01, 2009 This book really touched my heart. I loved the idea how the author made the story about two kids who grew up together and from the day Emily was born they were placed in the same bassinet up to when they turned teenagers they were inseparable. These two kids who are practically one person combined together has an outstanding relationship and bond with each other. They couldn't possibly live without the other. Towards the end while Chris was in the witness stand and he explained in detail how he feels toward Em, I thought the words that the author used about "being home" was heartfelting. While and after reading this book, I couldn't stop thinking about it and I couldn't help being pulled into the story. This book is a tear-jerker and enchanting.
| | Absorbing! by A. Drugay (San Francisco, CA) 4 Stars August 25, 2009 I have never read Jodi Picoult before this, though I'd been meaning to check her out ~ and I have to say, this book was PURE INDULGENCE. An engaging and dramatic storyline with melodramatic, 2-dimensional stock characters, but it's about teenagers and the suburbs, which screams "summer read" to me, and I gobbled it right up like an ice cream sundae on a hot day. A little sickly sweet, and not exactly good for me, but a real treat. Like I said, pure indulgence.
| | Great book by Mama Jo (Upland,CA) 5 Stars August 22, 2009 This book is a page turner. The depth that the author takes you into each of the characters is crazy. Hard to put down and hard to forget these people who have become your neighbors your children, yourself.
| | Total disappointment at end!! by Concerned Parent (Boston, MA) 2 Stars August 11, 2009 I expected something more at the end of book when we "found out" what really happened, it just seemed so.... so, I don't know even know what but just not what I expected. On a separate note, it was a bit bothersome to have the author use the Lord's name in vain sooooooooooooooo many times and often with laced with profanity. I think she should perhaps be a little more thoughtful to people of the Christian faith and how over the top her use of it was. Maybe next time she use a profanity using buddha, confuscious, etc., etc., Just saying.
