EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description The surprisingly hopeful story of how a straight, nonpromiscuous, everyday girl contracted HIV and how she manages to stay upbeat, inspired, and more positive about life than ever before At nineteen years of age, Marvelyn Brown was lying in a stark white hospital bed at Tennessee Christian Medical Center, feeling hopeless. A former top track and basketball athlete, she was in the best shape of her life, but she was battling a sudden illness in the intensive care unit. Doctors had no idea what was going on. It never occurred to Brown that she might be HIV positive. Having unprotected sex with her Prince Charming had set into swift motion a set of circumstances that not only landed her in the fight of her life, but also alienated her from her community. Rather than give up, however, Brown found a reason to fight and a reason to live. The Naked Truth is an inspirational memoir that shares how an everyday teen refused to give up on herself, even as others would forsake her. More, it's a cautionary tale that every parent, guidance counselor, and young adult should read. |

| Indeed marvelous by giovanni (Greece) 5 Stars November 03, 2009 Although now a chronic disease , hiv/aids is withought a doubt the illness that carries the heaviest stigma around . Science has shown that there are very specific ways through which it can be transmitted and that this is a preventable disease but instead of compassion , the infected individuals have to battle the ostracism ( and often acts of violence and pure aggression in some countries ) their community puts them through .
Marvelyn Brown is a young woman who got the virus at the tender age of 19 . Instead of keeping a low profile and trying to hide her situation , she had the guts to speak out and become an activist . No matter what you think about the writting style of this book , the story has it's own power and is inspiring and at the same time heartbraking . The book , the girl , the cause ( fighting the severe social prejudice towards hiv/aids positive individuals ) , all of them deserves everyone's praise and attention .
| | Awesome Book !!!!!!!! by Nickie (New Orleans, LA) 5 Stars October 18, 2009 I loved this book. It was very inspirational and eye opening. I think everyone having sex needs to read this book. If you don't have it, get it and buy one for a friend .
| | Educational but Entertaining by Sheere 5 Stars October 16, 2009 This book was not only educational but entertaining. It was a page turner from beginning to end. I recommend this book for ALL sexually active people, not young or old but all. HIV can happen to us at any age and we need to be real and start being honest to ourselves. This book did it for me. Stay strong Marvelyn, we love you!
| | The Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful, and (HIV) Positive by Kim S. Jones 5 Stars August 18, 2009 The book was in excellent condition. I purchased it for myself and additional books of the same kind for gifts. The book arrived at the time it was suppose to.
| | Reminding us that we're still in denial... by Empress Lay (Miami, FL) 5 Stars July 13, 2009 This book proves one thing: ignorance is still winning the war against our psychological intelligence. Nobody doubts that sex is happening down every avenue of culture, age, and location but nothing more than drilled out, ineffective lectures from health classes and the occasional parent chat is being said to warn youths against the real life and death risk that's taken with sexual intercourse. I salute the author for having the strength to be frank about this issue. Her story, unfortunately, is not a unique one for far too many lost and unfulfilled young girls have found themselves, too, searching for love in the wrong places and ending up with a disease or unplanned pregnancies to fulfill their emptiness instead. I wish women abroad would start raising their standards and men would also begin to step up to the plate and act more responsibly...then maybe, we might be able to end this disease's progression.
I enjoyed reading this first-hand account on contracting HIV and AIDS as a teenage girl. It inspires me to become an activist in what I believe in, as well. The author proves that through your pain and sorrow you can turn your situation around and in turn, uplift and alter the course of other lives for the better. Of course, she doesn't express this message too formal and authoritatively in the book; she successfully delivers humor, realism, and her naked truth to the absolute fullest.
It was also an easy, straight to the point read; only took the course of a few days to finish.
