Well written book that focuses on bipolar II and mild forms by theshortywriter (New Mexico) 4 Stars

I bought this book two months after my diagnosis of bipolar type II. This book describes in depth how depression and hypomania effect people. It's very practical and focuses more on people who don't experience mania and have serious depressive episodes.

A little long for the info given; it's only about the depressive side. by Christine E. Ellis 4 Stars

This book can get a bit technical and provides too much information that isn't relevant to the casual reader. There is great information on the current medications that is easy to read, understand and remember. If you have been diagnosed with or think you may have bipolar disorder, this book probably isn't for you. After reading this, you will need to find a book that includes more information about the mania side of bipolar.

This book was a real eye opener for me. I always thought that depression with a few "ups" were my lot in life. But after reading this book, I headed straight to a psychiatrist and wowzer! Put me on a couple new meds and my life is actually enjoyable now. I highly recommend this book if you have been on antidepressants and are still asking, "Why am I still depressed?" Or the friend or family member of someone who is chronically depressed even with an antidepressant. BUY IT!!!

I've learned more about myself from this book than from any other single source by L. Gompf (Austin, TX USA) 5 Stars

I was hospitalized a month ago for a suicide attempt that seemed to appear out of nowhere. Nobody, including me, understood why. Then I found Phelps' website and his book. After 35 years of living on a roller coaster, everything is finally making sense. I don't have classic mania, but that doesn't mean I have "simple" depression. As my husband and I read this book, we saw me everywhere. The books is much better organized than the website and is worth buying just to save on the paper and following circular links. But it refers back to the website often and I hope that his site gets a few organizational improvements. Don't let the confusion of his website stop you from getting the book! The book's text has a better feeling of completeness and a consistancy of style. In many ways, this book is like a "starter" book -- I want to learn more about how my PCOS, PMS and migraines fit into all this. I get frustrated having to go online and follow links to abstracts. But if he'd taken the time to put everything into the book, he'd never be able to finish. And it is such an important book, an important topic.
