CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 9 reviews)
| Not relevant to shelf exam by T. Man 1 Stars May 30, 2009 Good if you just want to learn surgery related information. Bad for the shelf exam. Irrelevant information. Will make you wonder if you studied. Perhaps suitable for surgical residency pimping.
| | Fantastic! I read ONLY this book and passed the shelf. by Jason Bourne (Northeast, USA) 5 Stars March 03, 2009 Fantastic book that is easy to read and very comprehensive. A lot of people favor Surgical Recall, but I just didn't like that one. Can't tell you why exactly. Something about its size and outline-style format. In my opinion, stick with Case Files.
| | Great for shelf review by KMK512 5 Stars October 12, 2008 Used this book for the last week before my surgery shelf and thought it was extremely helpful. Covered all the major areas, made me feel really comfortable taking the shelf.
| | Good for learning, not for Shelf by TN30 (Midwest) 3 Stars March 31, 2008 I agree with one of the other reviewers that this book contained a lot of interesting cases, but it was not particularly helpful for the shelf. I had 3 questions that were straight out of this book, but the vast majority of the questions can't be answered using this as a resource. I had a lot of heme/lab values on my test and 4-5 ethical questions where i felt at least three answers seemed quite reasonable. I don't really know how to study for those- they were situations that I never encountered on the wards or in lectures. I think a medicine review book probably would have been more helpful for most of the surgery shelf.
One more thing, for that guy who posted about "70% of questions" from the shelf being in this book, he also had that same quote about the OB/GYN case files. I think he's wrong on both counts.
| | good surgery review book by original thinker (chicago, il, usa) 5 Stars December 23, 2007 As a 4th year osteopathic medical student, i used the book to review for the shelf while i did my 4th year surgery rotation in ophthalmology. i don't really enjoy surgery, and i'm planning on doing a family practice residency, and ophthalmology seemed like one of the more useful choices for a surgery clerkship. i used case files because i wanted a relatively inexpensive review book that i would not have to read for more than one hour a day. i really liked the format of this book, because it is written in a style similar to how i learn. unfortunately, the shelf is a stupid exam and the question stems of the surgery shelf provide mostly useless information that take too much time to read. i would recommend this book in combination with submitting a complaint to your medical school about the uselessness of shelf exams, because they don't really improve your education at all.
