EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This is the fourth edition of the undisputed classic on the prefrontal cortex, the principal "executive" structure of the brain. Because of its role in such cognitive functions as working memory, planning, and decision-making, the prefrontal cortex is critically involved in the organization of behavior, language, and reasoning. Prefrontal dysfunction lies at the foundation of several psychotic and neurodegenerative disorders, including schizophrenia and dementia. * Written by an award-winning author who discovered "memory cells"-the physiological substrate of working memory* Provides an in-depth examination of the contributions of every relevant methodology, from comparative anatomy to modern imaging* Well-referenced with more than 2000 references |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 3 reviews)
| THE book on the PFC by Guitar Player (Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan USA) 5 Stars April 01, 2009 This is your one-stop shopping for all things prefrontal. It does not get more definitive than this.
| | capo di capi by Vincent Tomasino (Owings, Maryland) 4 Stars March 11, 2009 The "Prefrontal Cortex", 4th Edition [2008] by Joaquin M. Fuster is concise and lucid. The author integrated and distilled the research and clinical material from the past several years into a lively readable textbook. It is loaded with illustrations that are in bright colors, some are beautiful and add quality and accuracy to grasp the material. The author lacks no detail in relating the architectonics, frontal-thalamic circuits, neurotransmitters, and brain imaging to conceptualize the anatomy of the Prefrontal Cortex. It underpins purposive behavior or in the author's words the activity involved in "perception to action." Is this what TS Eliot had in mind when he said:
"Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow"
Fuster's Prefrontal Cortex sheds light onto this 'terra incognita."

Overview of Prefrontal Functions: The Temporal organization of Action
| | The Executive of the Brain by J. M. Fuster (Los Angeles, California USA) 5 Stars September 10, 2008 This is a comprehensive update of the undisputed classic on the prefrontal cortex, the brain's vanguard of evolution and the control center for the human agenda. It is what allows us to invent the future and to make it present. Here is the outcome of a unique exercise in analysis and synthesis, from a vast empirical foundation built by five generations of clinicians and neuroscientists. It examines in depth the contributions of every relevant methodology (over 2000 references), from comparative anatomy to modern imaging. From this thorough analysis emerges a dynamic and integrative view of the prefrontal cortex. At the apex of the perception-action cycle, the prefrontal cortex steers the temporal gestalts of behavior, language, and reasoning toward their goal. The author is the discoverer of the "memory cells," the physiological substrate of working memory; in recent years awarded the International Fissen Prize (2000), the Goldman-Rakic Prize from NARSAD, and the Miller Prize from the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (2006).

| The Human Amygdala by Paul J. Whalen (Editor), Elizabeth A. Phelps PhD (Editor)
Building on pioneering animal studies, and making use of new, noninvasive techniques for studying the human brain, research on the human amygdala has blossomed in recent years. This comprehensive volume brings together leading authorities to synthesize current knowledge on the amygdala and its role in psychological function and dysfunction. Initial chapters discuss how animal models have paved the way for work with human subjects. Next, the book examines the amygdala's...

| The Orbitofrontal Cortex by David Zald (Author), Scott Rauch (Author)
The orbitofrontal cortex comprises the ventral surface of the frontal lobe, and is critical for functions ranging from olfaction and emotion to learning and behavioral flexibility. Since the time of Phineas Gage, this enigmatic brain region has intrigued clinicians due to its association with personality. Recent research has started to unmask the specific operational principles of the area. Simultaneously, advances in the clinical neurosciences increasingly implicate the orbitofrontal cortex...

| The Human Frontal Lobes, Second Edition: Functions and Disorders (The Science and Practice of Neuropsychology) by MD Bruce L. Miller (Editor), Jeffrey L. Cummings MD (Editor)
Now in a revised and expanded second edition, this authoritative work synthesizes the rapidly growing knowledge base on the human frontal lobes and their central role in behavior, cognition, health, and disease. Leading contributors address neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, and normal neuropsychological functioning, and describe the nature and consequences of frontal lobe dysfunction in specific neurological and psychiatric conditions. Second edition features include a new section on structural and...

| Rhythms of the Brain by Gyorgy Buzsaki (Author)
Studies of mechanisms in the brain that allow complicated things to happen in a coordinated fashion have produced some of the most spectacular discoveries in neuroscience. This book provides eloquent support for the idea that spontaneous neuron activity, far from being mere noise, is actually the source of our cognitive abilities. It takes a fresh look at the co-evolution of structure and function in the mammalian brain, illustrating how self-emerged oscillatory timing is the brains fundamental...

| Anatomy of Neuropsychiatry: The New Anatomy of the Basal Forebrain and Its Implications for Neuropsychiatric Illness by Lennart Heimer (Author), Gary W. Van Hoesen (Author), Michael Trimble M.D. (Author), Daniel S. Zahm (Author)
This book presents the anatomical systems that take part in the scientific and clinical study of emotional functions and neuropsychiatric disorders. It discusses the limbic system-the cortical and subcortical structures in the human brain involved in emotion, motivation, and emotional association with memory-at length and how this is no longer a useful guide to the study of psychiatric disorders. The book provides an understanding of brain anatomy, with an emphasis on the new anatomical...
