Product Description
Over the past decade, system-on-chip (SoC) designs have evolved to address the ever increasing complexity of applications, fueled by the era of digital convergence. Improvements in process technology have effectively shrunk board-level components so they can be integrated on a single chip. New on-chip communication architectures have been designed to support all inter-component communication in a SoC design. These communication architecture fabrics have a critical impact on the power consumption, performance, cost and design cycle time of modern SoC designs. As application complexity strains the communication backbone of SoC designs, academic and industrial R&D efforts and dollars are increasingly focused on communication architecture design. This book is a comprehensive reference on concepts, research and trends in on-chip communication architecture design. It will provide readers with a comprehensive survey, not available elsewhere, of all current standards for on-chip communication architectures. KEY FEATURES* A definitive guide to on-chip communication architectures, explaining key concepts, surveying research efforts and predicting future trends* Detailed analysis of all popular standards for on-chip communication architectures* Comprehensive survey of all research on communication architectures, covering a wide range of topics relevant to this area, spanning the past several years, and up to date with the most current research efforts* Future trends that with have a significant impact on research and design of communication architectures over the next several years

Excellent and comprehensive coverage by Per Gunnar Kjeldsberg (Trondheim, Norway) 5 Stars
March 02, 2009
This book gives an excellent and comprehensive coverage of on-chip communication architectures. It focuses on bus-based architectures, but also includes chapters on Network-on-Chip and emerging technologies. It is easy to read (the advanced topic taken into consideration) and covers the topic in a complete way that I have not seen in other books. Since it is written by researchers in the field, it is natural that their research is detailed somewhat more than other work. This is not a problem, however, as other research is also very well covered. The list of references in each chapter is extensive and a very good starting point for further even more in-depth studies. As a Professor in CS/EE, I consider using the book in advanced design courses. I will certainly recommend it for those of my master students who need in-depth knowledge in this area for the thesis work. I am also convinced that the book will be very useful for design engineers in industry.

Comprehensive reference by A. Gerstlauer (Austin, TX) 5 Stars
November 15, 2008
The book provides an excellent reference about the state of the art in on-chip communication design, validation, modeling, synthesis and verification. It covers a wide and broad range of topics and brings all the relevant information together in a comprehensive yet clear and easy to understand manner. In each chapter there is enough depth to understand the basic principles tying different approaches together and relating them to each other. In addition, an exhaustive list of references is provided for readers that want to dig deeper. In summary, highly recommended for audiences that want to get a detailed overview of the field.

Networks on Chips: Technology and Tools (Systems on Silicon)
by Giovanni De Micheli (Author), Luca Benini (Author), Luca Benini (Editor)

The design of today's semiconductor chips for various applications, such as telecommunications, poses various challenges due to the complexity of these systems. These highly complex systems-on-chips demand new approaches to connect and manage the communication between on-chip processing and storage components and networks on chips (NoCs) provide a powerful solution.

This book is the first to provide a unified overview of NoC technology. It includes in-depth analysis of all the on-chip...

The Art of Multiprocessor Programming

The Art of Multiprocessor Programming
by Maurice Herlihy (Author), Nir Shavit (Author)

This book is the first comprehensive presentation of the principles and tools available for programming multiprocessor machines. It is of immediate use to programmers working with the new architectures. For example, the next generation of computer game consoles will all be multiprocessor-based, and the game industry is currently struggling to understand how to address the programming challenges presented by these machines.
This change in the industry is so fundamental that it is certain to...

Reconfigurable Computing: The Theory and Practice of FPGA-Based Computation (Systems on Silicon)

Reconfigurable Computing: The Theory and Practice of FPGA-Based Computation (Systems on Silicon)
by Scott Hauck (Author), André DeHon (Author)

The main characteristic of Reconfigurable Computing is the presence of hardware that can be reconfigured to implement specific functionality more suitable for specially tailored hardware than on a simple uniprocessor. Reconfigurable computing systems join microprocessors and programmable hardware in order to take advantage of the combined strengths of hardware and software and have been used in applications ranging from embedded systems to high performance computing. Many of the fundamental...

Network Processors: Architecture, Programming, and Implementation (Systems on Silicon)

Network Processors: Architecture, Programming, and Implementation (Systems on Silicon)
by Ran Giladi (Author)

Network processors are fundamental building blocks in modern communication systems, in which tens of Gbps network streams have to be processed in real time. Current network applications and traffic requirements necessitate processing speeds and capabilities that are beyond those of conventional, general purpose central processing units. Network processors are the only programmable solution that can handle modern network streams demands. However, implementing network processors requires a new...
