Nice book to help child (and family) prepare for tonsillectomy by BosKat (Boston, MA United States) 5 Stars

I bought this book for my neighbor's 4 year old son who was having a tonsillectomy. The whole family really enjoyed it. Other reviewers had mentioned that it wasn't accurate in regards to the procedure, recovery times, etc. No one has the same exact experience in a hospital or with a procedure no matter what procedure it is. The book was not meant as a medical guide but as a nice way for a child and his/her family to discuss and prepare for what can be a scary experience.

Very helpful to get child ready for surgery by J. A. Hudak (Pawtucket, RI) 4 Stars

This book definately diminished the fears of my 4 year old about having is tonsils out. He went from being scared silly about the whole thing to helping me pack his bags. The only thing I would say is wrong with the book, is that it very much underestimates the recovery time. I think parents should be more upfront about how long it will take to feel better.

This book really helped! by Laurel (Calgary, AB Canada) 5 Stars

Our 4 1/2 year old son needed to get his tonsils and adenoids removed and this book was recommended by our doctor. It was the perfect choice for our son, who is quite a worrier. He's the type who needs to know ALL the details before doing anything. We read it over and over and discussed every step of the process so he would know what to expect. We even took it with us to the hospital and referred to it often so he knew exactly what was next. It was amazing how close it mirrored our experience - even happened on the exact date as the book! He stayed SO calm and was playing in the halls a few hours after the surgery. There was no nausea, and he actually was asking for dinner 6 hours after the operation. It was hard to keep him in bed the next day, since he wanted to play with his friends. 48 hours later he was up and around, almost back to normal. I realize kids are all going to deal with this differently, but I'd definitely recommend this book to others going through the same experience! Laurel

My five-year-old grandson just had a tonsillectomy. This book was very informative and reassuring. He knew what to expect and was not surprised or shocked at anything. We did have the "Good-Bye Tonsils! party, which made him feel very special. I strongly recommend this book for preparation for youngsters' surgery. Very helpful.

Perfect book for 6yr old by LAK (Newtown, PA United States) 5 Stars

This story is from a child's point of view and so it was easily understandable to our 6yr old. It explained what tonsils are and why they might need to come out. While our daughter's tonsils came out because they were far too big & she snored, it was easy for us to add in why she was getting them out. It's honest with out being scary. We, too, did the tonsil party which eased any stress she might have been feeling. The things that happened very closely paralleled our experience right down to the I.V. and the yucky pain medicine. The drawings are very good, even showing what the surgeon would look like with his mask on. We had her surgery done at Phila. CHOP & they even liked the book (they made a copy of the cover page so they could look it up! I, of course, am quite proud of myself!). This came highly recommended as you can read other comments & I agree; this was the perfect book to get ready for surgery. We read it a handful of times & talked about it; we even brought it to school to share with other kids. Highly recommened.
