CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 142 reviews)
| Self-centered and pretty flaky. by C. McKinney (Raleigh, NC) 1 Stars November 25, 2009 I was extremely interested in the topic this book promises to discuss, but was very disappointed in its execution.
There are numerous grains of truth and useful information in this book, but it requires sifting through a great deal of dross to get to them, as they are presented in a way that is less prescriptively helpful than it is self-satisfied and self-congratulatory on the part of the author. She is extremely self-centered and self-referential, and the constant references to her personal insights, triumphs, failings, mentors, seminars, etc. grow dull and annoying within the first few pages. The average frequency of "I" on each page is astonishingly high; by the time the author reached "relationships with narcissistic people," I had begun to feel as the book was placing me in just such a relationship with her.
The author is also disturbingly unscientific; for support she frequently refers to such dubious authorities as the Institute of Noetic Sciences and a variety of aging pseudo-psychic gurus, mainly relics of the sixties drug culture, who are much less respectable than should be treated as experts by an M. D. in a book that claims to offer a valid psychological plan to help individuals mature and become well-adjusted. Many more reputable agencies, persons, and studies exist to consult and cite with regard to emotional health and the consequences of negativity.
Don't waste your time and money on this one.
| | The Best of Both Worlds by Steven Simon (San Mateo, Ca.) 5 Stars November 24, 2009 This is my first time I've been moved to post a review on Amazon. Dr. Orloff won my trust very quickly - she was a born an intuitive and was educated as a scientist - and she does an excellent job of weaving these two worlds together, complete with "how to" exercises to achieve emotional freedom. I was particularly impresssed with her candid and open self-revelations and how her life experiences have created her teachings. There is a lot of attention paid to intuition, gratitude, and forgiveness, among other qualities ("Don't take the bait", "Trust the integrity of what life brings you") that can help anyone seeking to release themselves from the tyrannical power of low self-esteem, anger, emotional upsets, self-criticism and other qualities that sabotage our desire to feel peaceful, loving of self and others, and grounded in who we really are - rather than living out our projections of what other people want from us in order to gain their acceptance. I have been both a psychotherapist and an eager seeker and client of many therapies and healing modalities since 1967 and this is one of the best, most honest roadmaps I have found to achieving my goals. I also saw Dr. Orloff do a workshop presentation in Phoenix and then went out and bought two more of her books. Can't recommend this book highly enough to people who are sincerely willing to change their emotional lives.
| | Powerful Medicine for the Soul by E. Khan 5 Stars November 21, 2009
Honest. Insightful. Powerful. Thought provoking. Inspiring. Reading this book was like taking a vacation for the spirit. In a busy life of lists, laundry, and lethargy, Dr. Orloff's book brought me back to laughter, life, and love.
Filled with practical tips on how to live more compassionately, and authentically, this book is a reminder to live from the heart, and discover ways to exist peacefully in a often emotionally charged world. Stories from Dr. Orloff's own life serve to illustrate the journey of emotional freedom, along with all it's twists and turns. One gets the feeling of sitting in an armchair, sipping tea, with a friend who is sharing her own hard earned wisdom.
| | Emotional Freedom by Judith Orloff, M.D.-Audio Book Review by Kajanda Love (Wood Dale, IL) 5 Stars November 09, 2009 I really enjoyed listening to this Audio Book. This is the first book that I have listened to by this author and I was amazed by how quickly I seemed to connect with the anecdotes that she sprinkled throughout the book. In one of the stories she recounted the tumultuous relationship that she had with her mother. She loved and respected her mother very much and she had a great family. However, it seemed as though she was always trying to live up to her mother's expectations, but never quite making it. She explained how her relationship with her mother affected her relationships in adulthood. This story reminded me so much of my own life and the relationship I have with my mother. I found myself wanting to fast forward to the end to see just how Dr. Orloff dealt with the situation. She was very good at bringing the reader along on her journey and then explaining how she dealt with the issue at that particular time and how she would deal with the issue as a professional psychiatrist. At the end of each chapter she gives the reader action steps. These steps help to identify and then work through the emotional issue. These steps offered insight and clarity and were easy to implement into my life. For example, Dr. Orloff recounted an argument she was having with a significant other and she stopped and asked herself if she was having the issue or was it her mother, or the characteristics of her mother working in her, causing this disagreement. What was great about the book is that as she told the stories she would explain how her emotional type or her state of mind at that particular time contributed to her reaction and although she handled the situation one way there maybe other options for the reader and she gives examples. She is so practical and easy to follow I felt empowered after reading the book. She had little quizzes throughout the book to help the reader determine their emotional type or areas where they needed to work on their emotional freedom. If you are at a point in your life where you feel like you are stuck and you are not sure why, this book may give you some insight and practical instructions on how to sift through some of those issues that you may have filed away for a later date. Now is the time to deal with those issues so that you can move forward in life. This book will help you to do a little introspection and begin to deal with some of the things that you may have been avoiding.Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself from Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life
| | Beautiful Inspiration by May 5 Stars October 29, 2009 Thank you so much Dr. Judith Orloff. Since reading the first 1/4 of emotional freedom and applying the spiritual wisdom and meditation exercises into my life - my life has taken a divine turn. For so long I had been stuck in a negative pit - shackled and with just a crouton of hope for freedom. This book has reached my heart and now i'm beginning to open up again.
I have been interested in meditation for so long now, from 13 to now - i'm 25. But I was only engaging in it sporadically. With the guidance of this book, I have now been meditating morning (10 mins) and night (15 mins) - observing my breath, giving gratitude for everything I have and reconnecting with love and the divine. I feel the divine again, and I feel freer than I have for a long time.
I went from being an anxiety-ridden negative-talker (which i have been stuck in for the past few years) to my optimistic, spiritual self. I am my essence again. I'd started to believe that I was doomed to being a walking disaster because of my creative nature. Now, with the guidance of Emotional Freedom, I can see that I can have the best of both worlds.
I have grown so much in the past week since implementing the guidance in this book - as a teacher, human, woman, artist, and living being. I feel my compassion reach others and it is such a beautiful thing to witness - finally, I'm living my life the way I want to.
I'm looking forward to reading and applying the rest of the wisdom in this book!
God Bless you always Dr. Judith Orloff .... this book is beautiful inspiration.
