| Ok, but Nursing Mothers Companion better by Ms Margaret 3 Stars May 20, 2009 This isn't a bad breastfeeding guide. It does an excellent job of describing a good latch-on, how to use compression while nursing, and how to recognize signs that your baby is actually drinking (vs. just sucking). That said, Kathleen Huggins's "The Nursing Mother's Companion" is a superior go-to reference for everything breastfeeding. It's better organized, more concise, and lite on formula = poison rhetoric. Jack Newman's website, however, does contain some invaluable video footage demonstrating proper latch-ons and babies drinking well. I'd recommend that website as a supplement to the Huggins book.
| | Arrogant and Impractical Guide to Breastfeeding by Todd Graverson (Milwaukee, WI) 1 Stars May 19, 2009 I have purchased a number of books on the topic as my wife just gave birth to our first child. Without a doubt this book is the worst of the lot. The only reason I'm writing a review for this is to save others from having to read this book. As new parents we were filled with many questions and looked to a book like this for answers (seemed logical given the title). Instead, this book talked more about the breastfeeding habits in Indonesia and Sub-Sahara Africa than how to help sleepless parents get through the 3rd night before milk comes in.
The second major criticism I have of this book is the flat out arrogance and biased writing towards breastfeeding this book offers. I'm willing to accept and agree that breastfeeding provides a great deal of benefits, but this book essentially compares formula feeding to giving the child cigarettes. Almost more annoying is that there are no useful tips. Every chapter has the same message - YOUR LATCH MUST BE WRONG, as that is the advice for 95% of concerns.
Please do not buy this book, unless you want to be scolded by someone you've never met.
| | I love this book! by beape (minnesota) 5 Stars February 17, 2009 Dr. Newman's conversational style in this book is great. I have many helpful breastfeeding books, such as Kathleen Huggins' Nursing Mother's Companion (which is also excellent), but the Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers fills a different void in the literature. I learned a great deal from this book, particularly from the sections on "Not Enough Milk," and "Jaundice" and "Breastfeeding While on Medication."
This is also a book that I never tire of reading. I've re-read it many times, and always learn something new that I'd overlooked before. Excellent!
| | Thank you Dr. Newman! by Jamie Walterscheid (Dallas, TX) 5 Stars December 21, 2008 With the rise of the nuclear family, there has been a decrease in the number of women who breast feed. We no longer have a village raising a child, and there are limited resources for those who want to nurse. I can't just ask the women of my village for help, not here in my suburban subdivision. This book and Dr. Newman's website have helped me to breastfeed my baby exclusively for four months now. I've gone back to work and am expressing milk, and I got advice on how to help my sitter feed expressed milk to my daughter. I was lucky to have lactation consultants while in the hospital, although they put me on a breast shield that took weeks to wean. My friend wasn't so lucky, but she used this book, La Leche League, and persevered. Now, 4 weeks later, she is able to breastfeed her son. There's so much more advice to be had, too. I use this book as a reference constantly, and we're now getting advice on feeding our baby solids. Good luck to all you mothers out there. Thank you for breastfeeding--you're doing the absolute best for your children!
| | Supportive and thorough by Sarah Page 5 Stars September 07, 2008 Jack Newman provides all the information for breastfeeding moms. He's really thorough and maintains that all women can and should breastfeed their children. He's a big advocate!
