Product Description
A masterful love story set against a backdrop of epic history and unforgettable courageIn the waning months of World War II, a small group of people begin the longest journey of their lives. At the center is eighteen-year-old Anna, the daughter of Prussian aristocrats, and her first love, a twenty-year-old Scottish prisoner of war named Callum. With his boyish good looks and his dedication to her family, he has captured Anna’s heart. But he is the enemy, and their love must remain a closely guarded secret. Only Manfred, a twenty-six-year-old Wehrmacht corporal, knows the truth. And Manfred, who is not what he seems to be, is reluctantly taken with Anna, just as she finds herself drawn uncomfortably to him. As these unlikely allies work their way west, their flight will test both Anna’s and Callum’s love, as well as their friendship with Manfred–and will forever bind the young trio together. Intriguing and complex story, with no easy ending or answers. by Star Dargin (New England) 4 Stars
November 27, 2009
This is the second book I have read by Chris Bohjalian and found it complex and intriguing. The second half of it I could not put down. I would not have picked it out on my own, it was a book group selection. In the group of eight woman, one woman could not finish it because it was too disturbing. It was a book you have to read slowly. The first part of the book, took longer to read because of the going forward and backward in time and the seemingly alternating unrelated stories of different characters. I have read several other similar time and place fiction and this is different. There were so many snippets of conversation and dialogue that showed you how things were they way there were. It was raw, it was depressing, it was scary, it was about hope and luck and circumstances. It is a book that stays with you long after you are done reading it. We mostly used the book groups questions in the back of the book and added our own in when we hit a venerable spot. Even if you don't read the book group questions, read the authors interview about how the title was chosen and about the journal the book was based on. I will now of read more of Chris's books.

An unusual book, and a wonderful one by Read More Books 5 Stars

As someone who is interested in history, I was excited to read Skeletons at the Feast. I had never read a novel set in Germany at the end of the war, featuring a cast of mostly Germans who were forced to flee the invading Russian army. This book illuminated the price we all pay for war, regardless of whether we are the victors or the vanquished. A vivid story, an excellent read.

World War II Romance--the German-Russian War by Miranda Rand (Schenectady, NY USA) 4 Stars
October 25, 2009
This novel presents the deprivations of war from the perspective of a German family who become refugees as the end of World War II as their property is overtaken first by Russians, then by Germans. At its core is a passionate romance between a Scottish POW and the (not-quite-yet-grownup) daughter of the household. All ends well as the closing chapters reveal. The POW and the daughter marry and raise a son. The mother survives the war and settles in the heart of Germany. The novel is tight and well written. It keeps the suspense going to the end.

Compelling by QuirkyMama (Boston, MA) 5 Stars

When I first picked up this book, I was disappointed in Bohjalian's latest choice of subject matter. I felt that it was too common of a topic - that, compared to the subjects of previous novels like Midwives and Trans-Sister Radio, it was unoriginal. I was wrong. This book can only be described as breathtaking. He offers haunting (and, at times, painful) depictions of the events that unfold, leaving little to the imagination - which, in this case, is a good thing. While it's true that the characters aren't developed in as much detail as they might have been, they are certainly adequate. Additionally, the setting of the story is essentially itself a character, and it is developed in exquisite detail. The novel is heartrending, the epilogue strangely satisfying. I could barely put it down.
