I agree, tastes great, less sodium! by M. Hansen (Minneapolis) 5 Stars
October 27, 2009
My 37 year old husband has had a rough year. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and then had a very damaging heart attack. Like the author of this book, he was told he may need a heart transplant. Of course he/we have been eating better and trying to find the most flavor bang for our buck AND sodium count. We love to eat out and try all kinds of foods and we wanted to keep that as a part of our life. I have loved this book because it reads like more than a cook book. I enjoyed sitting down and reading it, I looked forward to going back to it despite the fact that I was so bummed about NEEDING it in my life when I picked it up. I cannot say that about many of the chronic disease diet books I have been browsing! In addition to the recipes, the book gives a great primer on low-sodium eating, where sodium is found, what it is used for, and how to live low-sodium all the time. The author goes to great lengths in his own life to be at around 500mg of sodium a day, super low, and it is inspiring to read his commentary. I also like the board of people he used to help write the book. Even better, my husband and I have enjoyed all of the recipes we have tried so far. I like how the recipes are not bland and all areas of dinning are covered (comfort food, holidays, potlucks, light snacks, dressings, salads, sweets). The nutrition information on each dish is included, which is helpful for other areas of diet that we are monitoring. The book has me excited because it is helping me adapt my cooking and shopping to what I was hoping: that being low-sodium does not mean flavorless and boring.

This book is very imformative and helpful. Anyone looking for a NO/low sodium cookbook, need not look any further. The author not only is knowledgeable in no/low sodium cooking, but he is a heart disease survivor as well. It is helpful to read a book when you know that the author truly understands what people on no/low sodium diet life is like because he lives it daily. Thank you, Donald Gazzaniga, for all your time and effort to help us survivors. Kudos!!

Makes life on an almost imposible diet, yummy! by YJP (Seattle, WA USA) 5 Stars

I have been cooking using this book for 6+ months now and it is a huge blessing. I bought a bread machine, which the book recommends using for some of the bread recipes, for making wheat bread weekly (it takes about 5 minutes of prep and 4 1/2 hours in the machine). Tonight we tried the Pork Tenderloin Chili Verde (page 83) and it was incredible! This recipe took about 45 minutes of prep and 1 hour and 10 minutes to simmer. I did have to buy some unusual ingredients (at least for me) such as tomatillos and jalapenos, but I picked out the recipe before my weekly grocery trip and had no problems finding them. I like that the author gives helpful hints throughout the book such as using rubber gloves when working with the jalapenos, I would not have known to do that. My biggest frustration with the book is that it does not give overall cooking times for the recipes and some are rather long. I suggest reading the entire recipe well in advance so you can gauge how long it will take you. Also there are some mistakes throughout the book, however tonight I discovered a great website that has corrections for the mistakes and updates to some of the recipes, which I just penciled in. The website also makes new suggestions for bread machines, as the Breadman 810 is no longer available. [...] This cookbook is a hit in our house and makes life on an almost impossible diet enjoyable and yummy. I am very thankful for it.

This cookbook is a life saver - literally. I was going crazy trying to find low or no sodium recipes after my husband was diagnosed with CHF. The recipes in this book are tasty and easy to prepare. The encouragement is also much appreciated. I would recommend this item to anyone with CHF or anyone needing to limit their sodium intake.
