A must-read for all first-timers by Shannon Lau 5 Stars
November 02, 2009
This is my first baby and, like every pregnant woman, I am anxious about labor and delivery. This book helped calm my nerves and ease my mind so much. I feel so much more comfortable and prepared for what is to come. I definitely recommend this to any mommy-to-be!

Unfortunately, a one sided discussion by JG (Chicago, IL United States) 2 Stars

A book that "doctors can recommend" says it all. If you want to be happy with what your doctors recommends then this book is it. However, if you are interested in a balanced discussion of the pros and cons of medical interventions during birth then this book is not for you. While many of the quotes that they include provide an insight into different options unfortunately the editorial content consistently presents the doctor's pro-intervention viewpoint and glosses over potential risks. The content can also be misleading, for example they say that "the maternal death rate in the US is significantly lower than that of most of the rest of the world" but our maternal death rate is currently around 23rd in the world and about last for industrialized countries. I gave it two stars because the quotes and summaries of different methods where honest, balanced and represented many school of thought.

So Glad I Knew My Options! by Brittny Hansen (Provo, UT United States) 5 Stars
April 29, 2009
This book was a great resource to see all of the pros and cons of different pain relief options during child birth. It was so nice to know what the different side effects could be using different drugs or birthing methods. I ended up going mostly natural with one dose of Fentanyl as I was transitioning. Before reading this I thought it was an epidural or nothing. My birthing experience was wonderful because I knew my options. I think every woman should read this book. Even if you're sure you know what you want to do, it's good to consider other options. You never know what might happen in the delivery room and the last thing you want is to be surprised then!

Best shower gift EVER!!! by Deanna (Rhode Island) 5 Stars
April 19, 2009
This is the only book you need to read about pain relief in labor! I was given a copy of Easy Labor as a shower gift when I was 7 months pregnant, and my baby is now 5 months old. This book was the best of the best out of all the books I read. Unlike any other pregnancy book, this does not try to sell you on one kind or another of birth experience or pain relief technique. This book will not make you feel evil if you choose to have an epidural, and if you are planning a natural birth, you will find lots of helpful tips and advice. I really liked how they made the point that you can mix many of the natural and medical techniques. The main message is to make informed choices, and I was better informed about pain relief options after reading this book than from all the information I got combined from my childbirth classes or other books and "helpful" friends. All the options are covered in good detail. These authors have a very nice conversational style making this book extremely easy to read. The fact that this book is so open-minded about different pain relief options is remarkable, and very reassuring. It should be required reading for EVERY pregnant woman. It was the most useful shower gift I got!

Misrepresenting Epidural and Medical Interventions by Author of Healing Our Children & Cure Tooth Decay (San Jose, CA) 2 Stars
December 30, 2008
This book appears to be open minded and holistic supporting the pro's and cons of hospital versus birth centers. They talk about epidural as if it is no big deal, and while appearing to be balancing, seem to prefer the hospital approach. Having drugs and so forth may be comforting to some, but our bodies are designed to give birth naturally. Sometimes help is needed, but drugs can have dangerous effects on both the mother and newborn. The author's provide misleading evidence to make it seem like an epidural is no big deal, and that natural pain relief methods seem to not work. This is highly misleading advice. There are some good points and information in the book, but I don't see how one can pick out truth from fiction. It seems to be in a fantasy realm. Labor takes work, that is why it is called LABOR.
