EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description By the Kate Greenaway Medalist Deep in the woods in an old white cabin, three friends make their pumpkin soup the same way every day. The Cat slices up the pumpkin, the Squirrel stirs in the water, and the Duck tips in just enough salt. But one day the Duck wants to stir instead, and then there is a horrible squabble, and he leaves the cabin in a huff. It isn't long before the Cat and the Squirrel start to worry about him and begin a search for their friend. Rendered in pictures richly evoking autumn, Helen Cooper's delightful story will resonate for an child who has known the difficulties that come with friendship. Included at the end is a recipe for delicious pumpkin soup. |

| Great book! by Southerngirl (DFW, TX) 5 Stars October 30, 2009 My daughter is 2 and loves this book. The pictures and story are very cute - I would definitely recommend to others.
| | Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth, Or We Can All Learn From Each Other! by Lynn Ellingwood (Webster, NY United States) 5 Stars November 17, 2008 This is a very sweet story about a group of friends who live together happily and cooperate very well together until one of them becomes dissatisfied with "the rules" or habits that become a ritual part of their lives. Duck wants to stir the soup! What to do! A good story on how people grow up and begin trying new things and families have to learn to adapt to the new found roles and skills of their members.
| | Great Book for my Preschool Class by M. Parker 5 Stars October 06, 2008 This book does have quiet a few words, and at first that made me think it may not keep the interest of my preschool class. But I was wrong. They absolutely love this book. It is a great book that demonstrates friendship and teamwork. Do not hesitate to buy. It is well worth it. It has a great message that would be wonderful for a child of any age. Even adults who get stuck in a rut. Enjoy!
| | Warm, FUNNY, great illustrations - family favorite by H. Sapiens (Sacramento, CA United States) 5 Stars June 24, 2008 I did not know the extent to which my daughter would come to love this book when I purchased it. Had I known, I would have found a hardcover edition. Let me just say, this is the first book that my almost 4 year old memorized (word for word). This is the first book that my 9 year old will go to when he wants to read to her (e.g. he wants to read it and needs an excuse).
It is a warm tale about friendship, sharing, and overcoming conflict/compromise. It handles conflict naturally (e.g. real characters that really argue and act just like my kids). Real characters with real feelings and vivid imaginations portrayed with flawless, humorous illustrations (we especially love when Squirrel and Cat envision Duck's new shop). The colors of the artwork are warm and orange - just like pumpkin soup. You feel like you are peering in on their lives (like the two little bugs that appear on every page). Most importantly, this book does not come off preachy - so I think it rings true with children. In fact, my daughter uses this book to relate sharing issues - all I need to say is "remember how Duck wanted to use Squirrel's special spoon?" and she gets it - instantly.
And - for some odd reason - my children are now fascinated with pumpkins and want to cook. We have made pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin ravioli... and.... Pumpkin soup - The Best You Ever Tasted!
| | Makes me want to make soup! by Heidi Delatorre (Wine Country, CA) 4 Stars January 05, 2008 I like how the characters finally work together to create harmony. It's a great, simple lesson. The illustrations are very nice and I love the feel of the book. Great choice for the 4-8 set!
