EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Bestselling author and columnist Carl Hiaasen returns with another hysterical mystery for kids set in Florida's Everglades. Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved. But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a "family emergency," Nick and Marta just don't buy it. No, they figure the class delinquent, Smoke, has something to do with her disappearance. And he does! But not in the way they think. There's a lot more going on in Black Vine Swamp than any one player in this twisted tale can see. And Nick and Marta will have to reckon with an eccentric eco-avenger, a stuffed rat named Chelsea, a wannabe Texas oilman, a singing substitute teacher, and a ticked-off Florida panther before they really begin to see the big picture. That's life in the swamp, kids. |

| A Great Book For My Grandson by Larry H. Walton (East Liverpool, OH USA) 5 Stars October 08, 2009 This is certainly a great book.
I cannot wait until my grandson has read it.
We will have much to talk about
If your grandson ( mine is 13 yrs old) is a problem to buy for, consider this book. You,both, will be better for it
| | SCAT by Jeremy Zavell (GEORGETOWN, SC.) 5 Stars October 03, 2009 THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK. ONE I JUST COULDN'T PUT DOWN ONCE I STARTED TO READ IT. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AND GREAT READ.
| | "Language" issues by K. Anderer (Alexandria, Virginia) 2 Stars August 14, 2009 Shame on ME for not having read it first, but I purchased this for my 8-year-old daughter who is a voracious and advanced reader. This book (and other children's books by Hiaasen) came very highly recommended. However, my daughter got very upset the first time she saw the word "damn" used and even more upset when she ran across the word "dumbass." Obviously it was a little bit of an overreaction on her part, but understandable for a child who has been told these words are bad.
I am a great fan of Hiaasen's work, but in hindsight--given the subject matter of his novels--it seems like a preview on my part would have been wise.
| | Ooof. by reading geek (Providence RI, USA) 2 Stars August 07, 2009 I love Carl Hiassen's work. I have read every single book. I loved Hoot, and Flush. Scat is terrible. To readers unfamiliar with Hiassens work, the book seems great. However, after reading Hoot, which I inhaled and Flush which I found fantastic, Scat was a let-down. The plot was all too familiar. Plot twists seemed to be poorly weaved. So if you have never read Hiassens work, start here, then Hoot, then Flush. Then, you will keep getting amazed at how wonderful his work is.
| | Absolutely not for anyone under 16 by Barbara A. Malia 2 Stars August 05, 2009
I WOULD ADVISE ADULTS BUYING THIS BOOK FOR THEIR
CHILDREN TO READ IT FIRST. I'D HATE TO SEE A 10
OR 12 YEAR OLD CHILD READING THIS. A SCHOOL TEACHER
WHO LIVES IN A HOUSE WITH DEAD STUFFED ANIMALS. A
STRANGE SWAMP GUY TIEING ANOTHER MAN TO A TREE WITH
NO CLOTHES ON. AND THE SUBJECT OF ARSON BEING TREATED
WITH A "SO WHAT" ATTITUDE. THE CHARACTERS OF NICK AND MARTA AND
OTHER SCHOOL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED MORE. AND
A LOT LESS ON TWILLY THE NATURE LOVER.
