Solid-State Laser Engineering (Springer Series in Optical Sciences)

Solid-State Laser Engineering (Springer Series in Optical Sciences)
by Walter Koechner (Author)

Written from an industrial perspective, Solid-State Laser Engineering discusses in detail the characteristics, design, construction, and performance of solid-state lasers. Emphasis is placed on engineering and practical considerations; phenomenological aspects using models are preferred to abstract mathematical derivations. Since its first edition almost 30 years ago this book has become the standard in the field of solid-state lasers for scientists, engineers and graduate students.

Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications 3 (Springer Series in Optical Sciences) (v. 3)

Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications 3 (Springer Series in Optical Sciences) (v. 3)
by Peter Günter (Editor), Jean-Pierre Huignard (Editor)

This is the third and final volume of a three volumes book series devoted to photorefractive effects, photorefractive materials and their applications. Since the publication of our first two Springer books on "Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications" (Topics in Applied Physics, Vols 61 and 62) almost 20 years ago a lot of research has been done in this area. New and often unexpected effects have been discovered, theoretical models developed, known effects could be finally explained...

Quantum Nonlinear Optics (Advanced Texts in Physics)

Quantum Nonlinear Optics (Advanced Texts in Physics)
by E. Hanamura (Author), Y. Kawabe (Author), A. Yamanaka (Author)

This graduate text gives an introductory overview of the fundamentals of quantum nonlinear optics. It deals with the organization of radiation field, interaction between electronic system and radiation field, statistics of light, mutual manipulation of light and matter, laser oscillation, dynamics of light, nonlinear optical response, nonlinear spectroscopy as well as ultrashort and ultrastrong laser pulse. In addition, latest results of the frontier of this science are presented. Problems and...

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
From the 1st editon: This smooth introduction for advanced undergraduate students starts with the fundamentals of lasers and pulsed optics. Thus prepared, the student learns how to generate short and ultrashort laser pulses, how to manipulate them, and how to measure them. Finally, spectroscopic implications are discussed. This rounded text gives the student an up-to-date introduction to one of the most exciting fields in laser physics. The 2nd edition will be completely revised, and will include two new chapters entitled "Coherent Control and Related Femtochemistry" and "Towards Attosecond and High Order Harmonics Generation"

Fairly good but not excellent by Vahit Sametoglu (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) 4 Stars
August 17, 2006
The second edition of this book is revised and enriched with new and hot materials. The concepts of "coherent control" and "attosecond pulses" are added as they become more and more significant. The first 3 chapters of the books do not seem very useful. Although the authors tried their best, especially the discussion of "mode-locking" is not as clearly stated as Demtroder's "Laser Spectroscopy". More vivid, illustrative and tangible examples would be very useful. The rest of the book can be considered good and in my opinion this books does not deserve more than 4 stars.

This short book is an excellent overview by Eric Landahl (USA) 4 Stars

I use femtosecond lasers in my graduate work, and I found this book an excellent source of review material in preparing for my oral examinations. It is not very detailed or mathematical, but has excellent phenomenonological discussions of a variety of laser properties and techniques. It is also handy because it is fairly recent. I found particularly useful the sections on amplification, semiconductor lasers, and ultrashort diagnostics. This book is not a comprehensive guide to building and using an ultrashort pulse laser system because it lacks so much detail. However, the equations are explained very well, and the references seem fairly comprehensive. The book is also completely missing a discussion of fiber laser and ultrashort pulse propogation in fibers. The section on nonlinear ultrashort optics is also far too brief.

Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena, Second Edition (Optics and Photonics Series)
by Jean-Claude Diels (Author), Wolfgang Rudolph (Author)

Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena serves as an introduction to the phenomena of ultrashort laser pulses and describes how this technology can be applied in areas such as spectroscopy, medical imaging, electromagnetism, optics, and quantum physics. Combining the principles with experimental techniques, the book serves as a guide to designing and constructing femtosecond systems.

The second edition has updated and expanded its content, and includes more examples of ultrashort sources and a...

Short Pulse Laser Interactions with Matter: An Introduction

Short Pulse Laser Interactions with Matter: An Introduction
by Paul Gibbon (Author)

This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, covering the theoretical principles, present experimental status and important applications of short-pulse laser-matter interactions. Femtosecond lasers have undergone dramatic technological advances over the last fifteen years, generating a whole host of new research activities under the theme of “ultrafast science”. The focused light from these devices is so intense that ordinary matter is torn apart within a few...

Lasers

Lasers
by A. E. Siegman (Author)

Lasers is both a textbook and a general reference book with an emphasis on basic laser principles and theory. A unique feature is that it gives a complete, detailed, and accurate treatment of laser physics, building only on classical models, without requiring the reader to have a quantum mechanical background. It is for all scientists and engineers who work with lasers.

Nonlinear Optics, Third Edition

Nonlinear Optics, Third Edition
by Robert W. Boyd (Author)

Nonlinear optics is the study of the interaction of intense laser light with matter. The third edition of this textbook has been rewritten to conform to the standard SI system of units and includes comprehensively updated material on the latest developments in the field.

The book introduces the entire field of optical physics and specifically the area of nonlinear optics. It focuses on the fundamental issues including the electromagnetic origin of optical phenomena, the quantum...
