Acid in the Environment: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects

Acid in the Environment: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects
by Gerald R. Visgilio (Editor), Diana M. Whitelaw (Editor)

This book is the result of a conference held biannually at the Goodwin-Niering Center for Conservation Biology and Environmental Studies at Connecticut College. It uses an interdisciplinary approach to focus on important ecological impacts of acid deposition, the transboundary nature of the pollutants that cause acid rain, and domestic and international policies designed to reduce the emission of these pollutants. The book combines research findings and the policy analyses of experts from...

Governance as a Trialogue: Government-Society-Science in Transition (Water Resources Development and Management)

Governance as a Trialogue: Government-Society-Science in Transition (Water Resources Development and Management)
by Johanna Hattingh (Author), Anthony R. Turton;Hanlie J. Hattingh;Gillian A. Maree;Dirk J. Roux;Marius Claassen;Wilma F. Strydom (Editor)

The Global Water Partnership notes that the crisis in the water sector is a crisis of governance. The same is true for environmental management. Water management is an integral part of ecosystem governance and is closely linked to the sustainable development discourse. This book unpacks the core elements of governance, with a specific focus on water and analyses the linkages between key variables in an effort to increase our understanding of what makes governance good. It is a necessary read...

Natural Disasters as Interactive Components of Global-Ecodynamics (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)

Natural Disasters as Interactive Components of Global-Ecodynamics (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)
by Kirill Ya Kondratyev (Author), Vladimir F. Krapivin (Author), Costas A. Varostos (Author)

Large-scale natural catastrophes are environmental phenomena. Numerous studies in recent years have concluded that the frequency of occurrence of such natural disasters have been incereasing. leading to an enhanced risk of very considerable human and economic losses and the widespread destruction and pollution of habitats, settlements and infrastructure. In 2001 over 650 natural disasters happened around the globe with economic losses exceeding $35 billion. 2004 ended with the South East...

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Product Description
This book provides a detailed overview of our current understanding of different dynamic patterns involved in the redistribution of mercury in the global environment and its impact on human health and ecosystems. Mercury pollution in different regions of the world is a growing concern from environmental and epidemiological point of view. The increasing trends of energy production from fossil fuel combustion, mercury usage in a large variety of goods and products and the lack of emission control policy, especially in fast developing countries, represent a major environmental and political issue. In the last three years the European Commission, the United Nations, major international and national environmental agencies and governments have posed a significant attention on this growing issues primarily due to the lack of a concerted international effort in controlling and reducing the input of mercury in the global environment and its impact on human health and sensitive ecosystems.

Mercury Fate and Transport in the Global Atmosphere: Emissions, Measurements and Models

Mercury Fate and Transport in the Global Atmosphere: Emissions, Measurements and Models
by Nicola Pirrone (Editor), Robert Mason (Editor)

Mercury, primarily because of its existence and bioaccumulation as methylmercury in aquatic organisms, is a concern for the health of higher trophic level organisms, or to their consumers. This is the major factor driving current research in mercury globally and in environmental regulation, and is the driver for the current UNEP Global Partnership for Mercury Transport and Fate Research (UNEP F&T) initiative. The overall focus of the UNEP F&T report is to assess the relative importance of...
