Product Description
Jugular vein and carotid artery cannulations are among the most widely used surgeries in research labs around the world. These cannulations are extremely important for confirmed intravenous delivery of test substances and arterial blood collection. Cannulation reduces the stress of multiple sampling as observed in association with tail vein or orbital sinus techniques (Ling, 2003; Flynn, 1988; Cocchetto, 1983). Very few adverse effects, including a possible rise of corticosterones and a decrease in platelets, are associated with indwelling catheters except under chronic conditions (Fagin, 1983; Richman, 1980). Typically, technicians teach these skills to incoming employees and move on to graduate studies or other fields. A resulting "oral history" of cannulation has been passed down from technician to technician. I have endeavored to capture these techniques on paper. Through the years, I have searched for and collected a number of training materials and guides for teaching purposes. This is my attempt to compile all the necessary information in one source. The contents of this manual include two cannulation procedures detailed in a format of materials, instruction, and pictorial for each step. In addition, the manual is rounded out with information regarding procedures for anesthesia, pre- and post- operatives, anatomy, bleeding techniques using catheters implanted, and rat biodata compiled from numerous sources. The content is thoroughly researched and reported based on over 80 references and 7 reviewers’ suggestions.

Experimental and Surgical Techniques in the Rat, Second Edition
by H. B. Waynforth (Author), Paul Flecknell (Author)

The publication of this Second Edition, twelve years after the first, attests to the timelessness of the techniques used in experimental work with the rat. However, scientific progress inevitably brings to light new ideas and procedures. In particular, considerable progress has been made in the use of new anesthetics and analgesics. A completely new chapter has been written on these with unique emphasis on the applicability to the rat. The very variable standards of surgery that existed in the...

Experimental Surgical Models in the Laboratory Rat

Experimental Surgical Models in the Laboratory Rat
by Alfredo Rigalli (Editor), Veronica Di Loreto (Editor)

An All-Inclusive Guide to Surgical Techniques on Rats

The design of an adequate surgical model, like the choice of the animal model itself, is extremely important for obtaining reliable valuable data. Experimental Surgical Models in the Laboratory Rat summarizes a series of techniques that were applied in the Bone Biology Laboratories, School of Medicine, Rosario National University, Argentina.

Stopping just short of an exhaustive analysis of the techniques, this...

by Warren F. Walker (Author), Dominique G. Homberger (Author)

The careful explanation of each step of the dissection, helpful diagrams and illustrations, and detailed discussion of the structure and function of each system in Anatomy and Dissection of the Rat, Third Edition, optimize the educational value of the dissection process. These laboratory exercises are available as a bound set for the first time ever; They’re still offered separately, as well. This popular series, which includes Anatomy and Dissection of the Frog and Anatomy and Dissection of...

Lab Math: A Handbook of Measurements, Calculations, and Other Quantitative Skills for Use at the Bench
by Dany Spencer Adams (Author)

Work at the biology bench requires an ever-increasing knowledge of mathematical methods and formulae. In Lab Math, Dany Spencer Adams has compiled the most common mathematical concepts and methods in molecular biology, and provided clear, straightforward guidance on their application to research investigations. Subjects range from basics such as scientific notation and measuring and making solutions, to more complex activities like quantifying and designing nucleic acids and analyzing protein...

The Animal Research War

The Animal Research War
by P. Michael Conn (Author), James V. Parker (Author)

When overzealous animal rights activists threaten one of America's best-known scientists and academic leaders, he collaborates with an analyst of animal rights to produce a personal account of what it is like to be a medical researcher targeted by such a powerful movement.  This thoughtful and surprising book analyzes the effect of animal extremism on the world's scientists, their institutions, and professional societies. P. Michael Conn and James V. Parker analyze the motivations of animal...
