EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description For several decades, yoga has been a popular mainstream approach to health conscious living, and is used by those with medical disorders. Now, following a bevy of recent research studies, yoga has exploded onto the mental health scene, and clinicians and patients alike are embracing the use of yoga to effectively help combat psychiatric disorders. In Kundalini Yoga Meditation, Shannahoff-Khalsa—researcher, Kundalini yoga teacher for over 30 years, and worldwide authority in the field of alternative therapies for psychiatric disorders—weaves scientific insights, clinical trials, case histories, and disorder-specific techniques to explain how the ancient science of Kundalini yoga can be a useful stand-alone or supplemental treatment for psychiatric disorders. Written for all those in the mental health profession, the book begins by laying out a number of landmark scientific studies based on Kundalini yoga, all of which have led to a new understanding of mind-body dynamics, physiological states, and ways of noninvasively altering the brain and body. Included are novel yogic concepts on rhythms of the brain, personality structure, models for the mind and consciousness, and other fundamentals to enhance our understanding of health and disease processes. With this scientific overview in place, Shannahoff-Khalsa goes on to explore, chapter by chapter, how Kundalini yoga can be applied to the treatment of psychiatric disorders— including OCD and other anxiety disorders; major depressive disorders; bipolar disorders; addictive, impulse control, and eating disorders; insomnia and other sleep problems; chronic fatigue syndrome; ADHD and co-morbid disorders (conduct and oppositional defiant disorder); PTSD; and the abused and battered psyche. His work also illuminates the treatment of complex co-morbid disorder patients. Most importantly, each chapter includes the full set of disorder-specific meditation protocols and techniques described in complete detail—64 in total. Photographs help illustrate poses for easy simulation. The final section of the book covers the application of Kundalini yoga for individuals, couples, and groups in therapy, and includes an epilogue that discussed the future of psychiatry. Mind-body medicine is at the forefront of current mental health research and treatment, and the introduction of this ancient technology of the mind into the equation is a major breakthrough in our understanding of improved treatment for a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. Kundalini Yoga Meditation skillfully introduces this exciting new frontier, and equips psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, and other clinicians with the tools and techniques necessary to incorporate yogic meditation into their practices, and bring hope and healing to their clients. color and b/w illustrations. |

| | A wonderful book by H. Hong (san francisco,ca) 5 Stars May 04, 2009 This is a wonderful book that I strongly recommend it to everyone that has mental illness like OCD, Depression, etc. I am an OCD patient for a few year. I have a full time job and the ocd and anxiety normally came 2-3 times per week. After I found this book and also bought the author's DVD for OCD, and followed the instruction. After a month, I felt my OCD get improved, and after 3 months, my OCD disappeared. So if you didn't see the improvement in a short time, just keep your faith and keep doing it. It will show. I am looking forward to see the author in the near future and learn more about Kundalini yoga to treat my other mental illness. I have been recommended this book to all my friends who had mental illness or who had friends that were mentally ill. It was truely a blessing that I get a chance to learn this book.
After I met the author in MAy, I had been practice his psychosis technique for two month, and the result was also very good. The technique is going to be in the auther's new book which comes out earlier next year. I can't wait for that book to come out. It is worth every penny I spend. Amazon.com already has the title for the new books, under the auther 's name. I am doing so well that my psychitrist is reducing my medicine.
Thank you so much David!
| | Great resource, proven solutions to age-old problems. by Jordan S. Munsey (Big Island, Hawaii) 5 Stars March 31, 2009 The techniques contained in David Shannahof-Khalsa's book are easy to follow and extremely effective. I highly recommend it to anyone attempting to heal themselves or others. In an age when Eastern and Western medicine are joining forces to combat many illnesses, Kundalini yoga is leading the charge by performing scientific studies on the efficacy of its techniques. Bravo.
| | Exciting new findings by Kate Posey (Lakeland, FL USA) 5 Stars March 05, 2009 I came across KUNDALINI YOGA MEDITATION while doing research for my new book, MORE CLLIENT HANDOUTS FOR BRIEFER DEEPER THERAPY. Shannahoff-Khalsa's idea that selectively activating one half of the autonomic nervous system through unilateral forced nostril breathing made immediate sense to my untrained medical mind. The other findings I was discovering on meditation used brain scan imaging to show that changes in activity levels in various centers of the brain produced results that can reverse medical and emotional problems. Shannahoff-Khalsa's methods are more specific to particular anxiety and mood disorders. As a mental health practitioner with over 30 years of experience I am excited to have a tool that can work at the neurobiological level. I will need traininging in Kundalini Yoga and will have to find ways to adapt methods to the very conservative population I treat in central Florida.
