Product Description
New York Times-bestselling author Robin Cook returns with another ripped-from-the-headlines medical thriller, where DNA science, biotechnology, and religion collide.I t's been more than thirty years since New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton's college graduation and almost as long since he'd been in touch with former classmates Shawn Doherty and Kevin Murray. Once a highly regarded ophthalmologist, Jack's career took a dramatic turn after a tragic accident that destroyed his family. But that, too, is very much in the past: Jack has remarried-to longtime colleague and fellow medical examiner Laurie Montgomery-and is the father of a young child. But his renegade, activist personality can't rest, and after performing a postmortem on a young college student who had recently been treated by a chiropractor, Jack decides to explore alternative medicine. What makes some people step outside the medical establishment to seek care from practitioners of Eastern philosophies and even faith healers? Jack's classmate Shawn Doherty is now a renowned archeologist and biblical scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose taste for good wine and generally deteriorating health are taking a toll on his career. He has recently obtained permission for a final dig beneath Saint Peter's, and despite his long-standing grudge against the Catholic Church, begins his research-which eventually takes him to Jerusalem and Venice -only to make a startling discovery with ecclesiastical and medical implications. And when Kevin Murray, now Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, gets wind of Shawn's findings, he's desperate to keep them from the public. Kevin has strong political ambitions within the Church, but his association with Shawn threatens to undermine them. Kevin turns to his old friend Jack to help protect an explosive secret-one with the power to change lives forever.

Not a typical Robin Cook stuff by Ashish Agarwal (canada) 2 Stars

This book is a disappointment. I am a great fan of Robin Cook and his novels, but this book was a waste of time. It felt like the author didn't have a plot at all. There is no story.

Bilious buddies by Art Horizon 1 Stars

A book worth burning if only to stem the incessant rudeness of the characters. No charm, no evil, and even less good. It moves from an ill reasoned rant to banter between "old friends" that would be uncomfortable to overhear for its spite, much less read for pleasure. Somehow it reminds me of "Huis Clos" but in that case the torture of the characters at being together was the point, after all it was hell.

Wished I had Seen the Amazon's Reviews Before Reading This by Woodlandtrails 1 Stars

Caution-book ending revealed. This book was one big awful attempt at suspense it couldn't hold and completely dumped at the letdown ending. Let me whittle 367 pages down to 3 sentences. A archeologist supposedly found the bones of Mother of Jesus, lots of arguments takes place whether to expose this secret or even delve into its secrets (DNA etc.) or hide the find to save the Catholic Church the embarrassment of having made a mistake because Mary's body was supposed to have ascended to heaven bones and all. Kill off the archeologist and his DNA expert wife and bury the find inside the Catholic Church never to see the light of day again. Throw in a sick baby and the bad alternative medicine side stories to fill in space. End of story.

One star is too many by Photographer 1 Stars

This has to be the worst book that I have ever read. I must admit, I didn't really read all of it, it was so bad that I skimmed most of the second half. First we get 100 pages of Jack Stapleton ranting at chiropractors, acupunturists and homopaths. This was actually the best part of the book with actually some forensics. Suddenly, this thread is dropped and we are spirited away to Cairo and the Vatican where Jack's old roommate is digging up Virgin Mary's bones. Of course, Jack's other roommate is the Archbishop of New York (stop giggling) who doesn't want the secret of the bones revealed. The bone digger-upper's wife just happens to be a DNA expert and connects Virgin Mary to Eve (stop laughing). The Archbishop next sends a hitman to kill the bone people. The book ends when Jack flys to Israel to visit a present day Palestinian woman who has the same DNA as Eve and the Virgin Mary and she heals Jack's infant son that had cancer. Sorry for revealing the plot, but if I save some poor soul from buying this book I have at least done some good service.

I just read my last Robin Cook novel by K. Shultz (IA, USA) 1 Stars

This was such an awful book, on so many levels, that I could scarcely believe an author as famous as Robin Cook could pen such junk. Where to begin?! The characters were unbelievable, unlikeable, and boorish. The plot was as phoney as a two-dollar bill, as well as clumsy, bloated and again - boring. The priest's character was so distasteful as a person, and yet got no comeuppance whatsoever for repeated abuses of power and unbridled arrogance. The fights between the husband and wife team were like listening to nails on a chalk board - and for what possible plot purpose? NONE what so ever. The dialogue was totally unbelievable and contrived. I just can't think of a thing good to say about this piece of trash. I listened to this in the form of a 10-CD audio book so I was a captive audience, driving to and from work every day, an odious task that I try to make more endurable by listening to books, but this thing made my commute even worse. I was SO glad when it was over. And yes, the ending was contrived, stuck on in slap-dash fashion and very last-minute feeling - and it makes the reader feel cheated and unimportant. I felt like, Gee I guess Cook must've reached the number of words he was paid for and slammed the lid of his laptop shut then and there. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK - just my suggestion.
