| | Well explored and well written history of how Sugar took over our lives by Irina Shulkin (Arcadia, CA) 5 Stars July 05, 2009 The Sugar Blues
Sugar in tobacco was more poisonous then tobacco iself.
It is engaging (and horrifying in times) reading that brings you through the history of New Worlds exploration, Modern Wars, and Alcohol industry. There are many surprising facts on nutrition versus diseases like bubonic plaque, scurvy.
I have learned that Lime is not equal Lemon (hens vitamin C content). It was painful to read about Dr. Wiley story where he fought for society's health and lost the battle. The funny part how Refined Rice, that meant to help in fighting Communism in Vietnam (!!!!) almost sabotaged this "Great American War"....( Rice, that is stripped of it's skin is becoming a poison (as refined carbs do)). And, sadly enough, the war for health is greatly compromised in our minds despite so many books. So many people willing to ignore the facts just to save the Hamburger. Imagine the "Sugar blues" being quoted every 10 minutes on TV commercial instead of Carls Junior Cheeseburger...with the sexy young girl in the gold bikini....that the effect we want....just dreaming.
| | If you never thought a book could do this... by Cece (on the brink of sanity) 5 Stars April 30, 2009 I remember my mother reading The Sugar Blues when I was about 7 years old (so it must have been around 1988). I remember, even at that age, the things she explained to me as she went through our kitchen and threw out every food containing any form of sugar. We almost starved that first week, but as a result of this book and my mother's dedication, I was probably the only 7 year old who knew all the various names for "sugar" that you will read on the back of any box of processed food. Even though we slowly relaxed our "hard core" stance on sugar, our family never resumed eating as much sugar as we had formerly. My dad's chronic headaches improved drastically, and my mother would no longer wake up and barely be able to reach the kitchen for food before passing out. Even as a young child I had frequent headaches, and they improved for me as well. As an adult I am ready to re-introduce this kind of food-lifestyle for my own family, and the principles I learned as a child in The Sugar Blues are where I will be starting.
| | Excellent ; in details with vivid examples! by Saul Pazos-knoop 5 Stars April 30, 2009 You won't forget how, step by step, the author described how the refined is NOT good for us; how it was created from the sugar cane, and all the issues behind; you'll see all new deceices started since refined sugar appeared in human society, and how many evidences against it were ignored by the scientific community.
Fantastic book !!
