Patrick Bowers Fan by KJ Young (USA) 5 Stars

Patrick Bowers, Steven James' FBI Agent from "The Pawn", reappears in this second installment to the trilogy. The same characters who piqued my interst from the previous book, returned to keep me guessing in book two, "The Rook". Twists and turns await throughout this heart-stopping read. Just when you think you have it figured out, James throws another curve ball. Pick up "The Pawn" and "The Rook", you won't be disappointed.

"The Rook" aka: "Magneteoncephalography for Dummies" by Steve Taylor (Only visiting this planet) 4 Stars

Don't worry; it'll all make sense when you read the book. Steven James has once again penned a fine suspenseful thriller that'll keep you up late at night and wondering all day what will happen next. "The Rook" takes us on another serial crime but this time the government's involved. Are they the problem or the cure? Once again we follow FBI Agent Patrick Bowers and his team of dedicated agents, this time to catch a serial arsonist. Is that all there is to it? If you read "The Pawn" then you already know that Steven James is not going to write a simple story where everything falls neatly into place. And it doesn't. One really has to put on their thinking cap to piece the clues together for this mystery. Once I thought I finally figured it out I realized I didn't have a clue what was going on. You've gotta love that! In the end it'll all make sense. Biblically speaking there's not much here. No Christians, no gospel or Biblical messages, just free from the language and sex you'll get with secular novels. It does take a look into the evil man is capable of doing, however I don't agree with the final outcome. Although man has a sin nature from birth and as God's Word says is evil in his heart I don't agree that as individual's we are capable of doing every form of evil. Personally I have a list of things I've never struggled with and would never do even under penalty of death. This book was not clear on that. "The Rook" is an excellent, extremely well-written and a cleverly crafted story. Except for some missing security guards where there should have definitely been some I was overly impressed. I'm looking forward to reading "The Knight" and (I hope) many more Patrick Bower thrillers. If you like a good suspense novel order all three of the series. You won't regret it. Thrillers don't get better then this. 1 Star = Pathetic 2 Stars = Fair 3 Stars = Good 4 Stars = Excellent 5 Stars = Life changing

Excellent Second Effort by Ben Whiting (Fort Worth, TX) 5 Stars

Steven James' first offering, The Pawn, was an engaging, fast-paced mystery with plenty of plot twists and characters that are easy to care about. The Rook takes this formula and improves it. The stakes are higher, the plot even more winding, and the characters reach new levels of humor and emotion. This book does not assume knowledge of the prior book's events either, so reading the two out of order will not stem the enjoyment of either, aside from spoiling a few things that might otherwise have been suspenseful, such as who lives on for the next book. James is particularly adept at showing his characters wrestle with probing questions about the nature of man and his relationship with good and evil. Highly recommended, especially for those who like entertaining stories with plenty of thought and heart under the flashy surface.

Exceptional Mystery by DJT (Tacoma, WA United States) 5 Stars

This is an exceptional new series. Do not let the "Christian" writer label turn you away from this author and this series. I read a lot of mysteries and he is one of the best in keeping you guessing! His characters are believable and interesting. Does his Christianity come through in his writing? Yes, but I did not feel it detracted from the mystery in any way and I did not feel as if he was preaching. I am hoping his third novel will soon be available on Kindle.

Great Follow-Up by MasterAP (Maryland, USA) 4 Stars

The Rook is the second novel in The Patrick Bowers Files. Patrick is the main character. He solves crimes. There is usually a Mission Impossible-like plot to the story. Someone is setting fires to buildings. Someone is kidnapping girls and drowning them in tanks, then posting the videos online. Someone is trying to create a machine involving sharks. And somehow they're all interconnected. Patrick Bowers has to figure out the mastermind of these crimes before something terrible happens. And, of course, his step-daughter is in the thick of it with him. So you know she'll be involved. I enjoy Steven James' novels. They're full of detail and suspense. You truly never know who the villain will be until he unveils him and then you smack your head because it's so simple. His books are great for the problem solving/Sherlock Holmes-loving readers.
