CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 32 reviews)
| Revelatory in parts but also aimed at indoctrination by Michael Rapson 4 Stars November 22, 2009 This is the reissue of a book I read in the 1970s that was originally published in about 1963 as "The Science of Being and the Art of Living". It was Maharishi's introduction to what he called "transcendental deep meditation" (later the "deep" was dropped). It does have some profound insights, particularly about "being" as a real state beneath self and the book in general is intelligently written. However, you will note that the author extolls the reader to the practice of meditation as a way of concluding nearly every chapter: this seems to be an attempt to subliminally indoctrinate the reader. I subsequently learnt the technique, primarily because I sought the companionship of people claiming to be on a spiritual path. However, it became my considered view that this was a form of cultism and I eventually parted company with them. Sad really, because I think TM does have something to offer for stress relief and health enhancement. Yet I always felt uneasy about the organisation at an intuitive level. Far from being blissful and serene, the teachers always seemed stressed, jumpy and tense, as if they were harassed or overworked. In spite of its claims of promoting virtual immortality, Maharishi, who had the reputation of driving his teachers mercilessly, died like an ordinary person just last year (at least, by all reports). Very interesting and insightful book to read, however, for anyone seeking a metaphysical explanation of how life works.
| | inspiring and profound by A. Miles (North Carolina) 5 Stars March 30, 2009 I first read this extraordinary book thirty eight years ago. I could not put it down. I immediately read it through again and over the years since, I have read and re-read various chapters and sections, for this is a book of divine realization, written by a profoundly wise and enlightened world teacher. There is nothing else on self realisation on the planet that is expressed in such a clear, scientific, and penetrating way. It is an analysis of life, being, existence, God realisation and world peace for the age in which we live. You will be inspired to learn Transcendental Meditation from a certified TM Teacher and then the magical journey to self realisation truly begins, and you will go on realising how Maharishi in his life and in this book, is raising your own life and life on earth to fulfillment and blissful perfection. Anyone who aspires to live life to the fullest or who wishes to be a leader of society should read this book and learn Transcendental Meditation.
| | Do not waste your time by Roman Nies (Helibrunna) 1 Stars March 21, 2009 As a student of the different philosophical concepts of man, I could not avoid to come across the MT of the Maharishi.
The Transcendental Meditation TM is the invention of M. It is said that 6 Million people used this technique. M. tried to adapt the Indian meditative and philosophic tradition of the Vedanta to the western lifestyle to make it a big seller. TM is praised as a means for more creativity, health, intelligence and efficiency. His followers like to hint at scientific research, that TM reduces stress and has many other positive results. But they are silent about the negative effects that all occult techniques have. For prove of this read other books. You need to see both sides and recognize the risks! This is always the same business with such sort of spiritual advice! Emphasize that which is good for your purse and the immediate success and forget about the rest of it.
TM was becoming even a spiritual exercise for managers to deal with the daily stress. But the costs could be different in the long run. Losing the rational view upon matters of daily life, which is what I observe with people who practised similar meditation tools.
It is suggested in TM that everybody should have to find "himself" to discover his inner godliness. As there is a common trend for more spirituality in our time according to that what must be suitable for the individual taste this idea of God in oneself, which is taught in TM seems to fit perfectly for self-centered people. The similarity to the words of the serpent in the garden of Eden is striking: "Your eyes will open and you will be like God and recognize what is good and bad!" Therefore TM is nothing new as an eye-opener of doubtful origin which has brought the Maharishi many Rolls Royce.
TM does not so much sell a meditation technique. In theory it is an utopia. It is nothing more than wishful thinking to create on this world peace through meditation or any other spiritual means. It is a vain hope. Peace for world nor for oneself cannot be created by thinking alone!
| | A lot of knowledge in one book... by Richard Scott (CND in UK) 5 Stars September 04, 2008 There are two types of people who will read this book: those who haven't learned Transcendental Meditation yet and those who have.
For those who haven't, the book certainly provides the most in depth understanding and analysis of this unique meditation and its benefits in daily life. This insight can help you understand how TM is different from other meditations and decide for yourself if you want to go ahead and learn the technique from a qualified instructor.
For those who have already learned Transcendental Meditation, this book explains in detail the theory behind TM and acts as a valuable and authoritative resource to help you with questions either you or anyone else may have about the technique.
But in the end, it is just a book - if you want to experience the real thing, there is no substitute for actually learning it the only way you can - from a qualified teacher, one-to-one.
I did, and I've never looked back.
| | Must read for meditators by P. Kalina (Midland, MI USA) 5 Stars August 28, 2008 This is the second time I've read this book. Back in the 70's, as I was learning TM, I read it for the first time. Now, having had the experience that Maharishi writes about, I realize that this book contains essential truths about the nature of life. This book explains the mechanics of Transcendental Meditation and the importance of performing right action in life. I won't get into the cost of learning TM, but keep in mind the amount of money we squander on pharmaceuticals, alcohol, psycho-therapy, large screen TV's and other material things. TM is a priceless gift that can help everyone realize their full potential. I know so many people who can benefit from this technique. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn TM. That can only be taught by a qualified teacher. So people can read and read and read, but unless you have the experience, true knowledge of the Absolute will never be known. More than ever, our society needs to turn inward first (through meditation), then perform right action. It's just that simple.
