| Must Have for Any Mother To Be by Elisa Zied (New York, New York) 5 Stars July 16, 2009 As a registered dietitian, author, and most importantly a mother of two, I know firsthand how important it is to not only take the best possible care of yourself before, during, and after pregnancy, but to have information that's practical, real-world, and science-based. Liz Ward provides readers with all that and so much more in Expect the Best. New mom's everywhere can rest assured that the information in this book is extremely accessible and understandable, and most importantly accurate and based on the latest science. We mothers (especially new ones!) have enough to worry about without having to worry so much about what we should or shouldn't eat; this book takes all the guesswork out of the equation and helps women nurture themselves during their transition to motherhood. No mother-to-be (or even mother of more than one) should live without this book!
| | Healthy mom and baby by Kasie L. Sullivan (Boston, MA) 5 Stars July 13, 2009 This is the perfect all-in-one reference guide for any woman wanting to maintain or achieve a healthy lifestyle before, during and after child birth. As the mother of 3, I strongly believe in the power of exercise and a healthy diet. Ward's guide has provided me with great tips that I can incorporate into my daily routine. Expect the Best backs up my belief that putting in the extra effort pays off for both mom and baby. I have already cooked up a few of Ward's creative recipes for my family.
| | Great Resource for Any Woman Before and During Pregnancy by T. Gidus 5 Stars July 09, 2009 As a woman who is pregnant with her second child AND a Registered Dietitian, I thought I knew it all about nutrition for pregnancy. But everyone can still learn and Elizabeth Ward surprised me with how much excellent information is packed into this easy to read book. She dispells a lot of myths and I love the "Words of Motherly Wisdom" from other real life moms. Good nutrition is so important at all stages of life but when you are pregnant it is vital to watch what you eat, keep food safe, and keep yourself healthy for that developing child. I highly recommend this book to any woman who is thinking of becoming pregnant or is pregnant, even if it is not your first pregnancy!
| | Nutrition info for moms--and dads--before, during and after pregnancy! by Avid Reader Mom 5 Stars June 12, 2009 Pregnant women want to do what's best to give their babies the best possible start in life. When it comes to nutrition, this means optimizing your diet before you actually begin eating for two. Registered dietitian Elizabeth Ward shares her practical nutritional expertise about how to prepare your body for pregnancy and beyond. As a pediatrician and former director of a newborn nursery, I appreciate the fact that Expect the Best answers such common questions as whether it's safe to eat sushi during pregnancy, how much caffeine (or alcohol) is too much, and what to do if you just can't swallow those huge prenatal vitamins. The book also discusses how many extra calories are really necessary when you're pregnant or breastfeeding a baby and, unlike many other books on pregnancy and nutrition, this one uniquely addresses the role a father's nutrition plays on the future health of a child. I'm thrilled that I can now refer my patients to Expect the Best, which covers all of the above and a whole lot more.
| | Great "all in one place" resource by Hillary M. Wright (massachusetts United States) 5 Stars June 11, 2009 As the Director of Nutrition for a fertility treatment center I'm always looking for nutrition resources to recommend once my patients get the good news that they're pregnant. The fact that this book is written by a registered dietitian gives me great confidence that the recommendations are science-based and practical. The added bonus for me is the preconception information, which reinforces the education I provide, particularly when it comes to weight control. It then segways into the latest pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition information (which may change from one pregnancy to the next!), offering many realistic recipes and eating tips that make healthful eating during pregancy seem manageable.
