Teach Yourself Chemistry and Understand It! by James Koenig (Minnesota) 5 Stars
November 11, 2009
I am helping my son through high school chemistry and (desperately) needed a review. "Chemistry Concepts and Problems", is the review I was looking for. It starts out with the very basics, understanding the atomic structures and the periodic table. It progressed from there into chemical bonding, chemical equations, and how to work with "moles". Understanding moles again was easy with this guide. Learning about gases, liquids, solids, acid-bases reactions, and chemical equilibrium round out the book. Please realize this is very basic chemistry. It is equivalent to a beginning high school chemistry class - emphasis on "beginning". Even so. this is a wonderful review of the foundations that higher forms of chemistry are based on. One needs to understand the basics before building a foundation. Learing chemistry is easy with the format used in this book. The book poses questions about each subject and then gives the answers and explains why the answer is what it is. The explanations are quite simple and easy to understand. I knew some chemistry going into this book, and the book refreshed my memory and reconnected the neurons in my brain to once again have a basic handle on chemistry. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a high school equivalency in chemistry. Excellent book, excellent study guide, excellent framework for learning, and quite interesting. konedog

Didn't live up to the hype by Ted Bell (Phoenix, Arizona) 3 Stars

Like many others who wrote reviews, I purchased this book in preperation for a college chemistry class. This book had so many positive reviews that I thought it would be a perfect addition. Well, it doesn't live up to the hype given by so many 5 star reviews. How on earth can this be titled a "self teaching" guide? At best, it is useful as a review of what you might learn in a chemistry class (though not nearly as in depth as most college chemistry courses require). There is very little instruction on each subject (usually only a brief paragraph, if that) then a quiz immediately after. I was expecting a more in depth review of material and then maybe a quiz at the end of each chapter. While this book might be useful, I am so happy that I also decided to get the Homework Helpers Chemistry book. THAT book is actually written in a flowing, logical, in depth manner that makes learning each step more coherent for the new chemistry student. While I'm sure that I will refer to this book at some point during the course, I put more confidence in the Homework Helpers book.

Easy reading, almost too easy. by raziel 5 Stars

When i first opened this book and began reading, i was taken back. The question answer part after every part pissed me right off, but seeing all the wonderful reviews here, i decided to give the book a chance, and pushed on. There are three sections in each chapter: the objects, the study frames, and the self-test. The study frames is the most important part of this text, so i will focus solely on that. The study frames section include several numbered frames that serve to introduce and reaffirm concepts and ideas. Each frame has three parts: a few sentences asserting a truth, a question that asks your knowledge of the assertion, and an answer. At first i was perturbed they would ask questions in the first place and instead just offer statements and information. As i got into it i found it helped confirm what i had just learned. People in other reviews have complained that the answers are right underneath. I disagree. There are so many numbered frames all with questions practically right after one another that having the answers in the back of the book would have you flipping to the back every few seconds. Considering that the questions are most of the time too easy, this would be a complete annoyance. Better have them right below for a quick check. I sometimes even found myself glossing over the questions because after they introduced the idea, which was right above, answering the question was stating the obvious. At times i felt as if answering the questions was even wasting time, they were so obvious. That's a good thing. The real gem of this book is in the few sentences in each numbered frame that reinforces the ideas. After they have been explained, answers become obvious. It's a testament to how well you're learning. So far i've read the first chapter, and i'm loving it. I now understand differences between metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. I understand electrical configuration, atomic weights and numbers. The first chapter has elucidated the various parts of the periodic table, which has been of much curiosity for me for a long time. I used this with a nice graphical periodic table instead of the one that came with the book, which was a pleasure having good information to accompany well illustrated elements. [...] Before beginning reading, i knew practically nothing about chemistry. Now i'm beginning to get a picture which has been long overdue. I'd recommend this book for anyone who knows very little about chemistry and wants to get their foot in the door and just start learning ! ENJOY ~ :D

Invaluable tool by Chase (slc) 5 Stars

I'm not one to immediately pick up on things as I go along, but I have to contemplate and understand something in advance. Well, this book has been a savior for me, as it not only gives clear examples and straight forward examples, it also have many mini quizzes after each paragragh to help you learn alone with the answers underneath. The answers after each paragraph has not been a problem as the answer is far enough from my peripheral vision to not be able to clearly read it. Anyways, it works and even though I have not received my grade yet, the less stress and confidence this book aspires is totally worth it.

I needed to review/learn chemistry after being out of school for a long time as a prerequisite for Nursing training. This book is wonderful. Concepts are clearly presented. The programmed format reinforces knowledge immediately. This is the best bopok that I've found to learn the basic concepts of chemistry.
