Heal Your Hips explores an unprecedented range of preventive options you can take today to avoid hip injury and improve your hip health—including wonderful water and land exercises and intensive stretching. If indeed hip surgery is in your future, Heal Your Hips provides vital new information on several little-known, minimally invasive forms of surgery as well as straightforward coverage of traditional "replacement" surgery. You’ll learn what to expect with hip surgery—from preparing for the procedure to the day of the operation to returning home and recovering with physical therapy. The practical and long-overdue guidance in Heal Your Hips will be a revelation for the millions enduring the pain of hip deterioration and injury. Whether you or your loved ones are considering hip surgery or have yet to seek medical help, turn first to the indispensable expertise in this optimistic and accessible resource. | Amazon.com Review Orthopedic surgeon Robert Klapper, M.D., loves to operate, but he'd rather help you avoid hip surgery. Klapper, Medical Director of Cedars-Sinai Orthopedic Associates, has teamed up with Lynda Huey, who specializes in water rehabilitation and training programs with clients such as Wilt Chamberlain. In Heal Your Hips, they present a self-help program for pain relief. The first program consists of 13 illustrated exercises, one minute apiece. Eight are done in the pool; the others in a carpeted room. Next, the authors cover healthy and unhealthy hips in a clear and spirited style (e.g., healthy hips work like two ice cubes rubbing together--slippery, with no friction); the main causes of hip problems; and medical tests. You learn how to take an active role in getting the right diagnosis, what to do for less pain, and how to get started with pool exercise. Then the book presents both deep-water and shallow-water aquatic therapy exercises to avoid or recuperate from hip surgery, and stretches to do on land. If you have had hip surgery or you want to avoid it, this book will be a valuable guide. The book is clearly illustrated with photographs. --Joan Price |

| Heal Your Hips book user by Valerie L. Allen (Green Bay WI USA) 5 Stars July 11, 2009 This book is excellent....I wish I had found it 5 years ago..I would have followed all the advice give by the two authors and perhaps would not have needed a hip replacement. The information is easy to read, to the point and encouraging. I am an RN and am now recovered from hip replacement surgery and using the exercises and advice in this book to avoid having to have my other hip replaced. I have given the book to friends and family to read who are having hip pain/problems. The water exercises are fun and the instructions are clear. If you have any hip problems you should buy this book.
| | Awesome book! by cheryl d (california) 5 Stars March 04, 2009 [...] I found this book to be very informative and educational. I have been dealing with hip pain for years, and found more information in this book regarding diagnoses and treatment than I have from any provider I have seen! The exercises are illustrated and explained well, and this exercise regime is completely different than what the physical therapist was having me do. I haven't begun yet, but am looking forward to some pain relief, or an easier recovery from arthroscopic surgery. I also know what types of exercises to avoid, and which ones will be helpful; something my doctor never discussed with me. Thank you Dr. Klapper
| | great book by John A. de Planque 5 Stars February 24, 2008 very helpful and useful book, very good guidance on how to choose a surgeon, how to prepare yourself physically before and after surgery, heavy emphasis on aqua therapy exercises, highly recommend this book if you're considering total hip replacement, the surgeon mentions his web site, on which he offers free second opinions if you send him your xrays.
| | hip surgery or not by Kimberly Fujioka (Honolulu, HI) 5 Stars November 06, 2007 This book is very informative and can help a prospective hip surgery patient decide about his or her options. It is very helpful. I had hip surgery over 15 years ago; and I am hopeful about the new treatments today. I can say from personal experience, the exercises are critical to walking with ease whether you have surgery or not.
| | Heal Your Hips by Linda Bee 5 Stars October 06, 2007 October 6, 2007
My nephew who is an MD/PhD and specializes in joints and their movement recommended this book to me. It is fantastic and I am very glad that I read it before my upcoming total hip replacement. The information is medically solid, clearly written, and easy to follow. The book will be just as valuable after my surgery as before and should help in my recovery. One of the most important, common-sense pieces of information in the book concerns excess weight and the impact on joints. Whether you are having hip problems or you wish to avoid future problems this is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
