CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 45 reviews)
| Also the inflammation cure by T. Valdes 5 Stars September 19, 2009 I feel the same as everyone else, this book is full of excellent information and is backed by tons of research.
Perhaps not the easiest read, but if you are health-minded and want to learn the cause and cure for inflammation and related diseases, this book is excellent.
For those looking to treat arthritis and muscle and joint issues, I would like to recommend "The Permanent Pain Cure" By Ming Chew as an excellent companion book.
I used both books and tons of additional research to recover from shoulder surgery well ahead of time and also relieve a two year old knee injury. Additionally, I feel tons better, have resisted the flu while everyone else in my family was sick, relieved some allergy symptoms, and am a believer for life.
I highly recommend this book.
| | Over-the-Top by Linda Long (Fairbanks, Alaska) 5 Stars September 14, 2009 I received this product in a matter of a few days and in excellent condition also.
| | A Useful Resource, But Not Perfect by Irfan A. Alvi (Towson, MD USA) 4 Stars June 28, 2009 In this book, Challem describes the "inflammation syndrome," a condition of chronic inflammation which appears to contribute to and link a variety of diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, allergies, asthma, cancer, and many others.
Regarding treatment of these conditions, Challem describes the substantial side effects and risks associated with conventional anti-inflammatory drugs, and instead offers an alternative (or complementary) approach emphasizing diet and supplements. Based on other reading I've done and my personal health experiences, I believe that Challem's advice is generally sound. However, I have a few issues with the book which lower my rating to 4 stars:
1. The technical depth of the book is fairly limited. If you want to really understand the biology of the inflammation syndrome and the mechanisms by which diet and supplements act, so that you can apply your own judgment on a reasonably informed basis, you have to go beyond this book.
2. The information in the book is somewhat scattered and repetitive, especially with respect to recommended supplements and dosages. The book could be organized better and more simply, and should include more summaries of recommendations.
3. The summaries of studies often lack sufficient quantitative detail in terms of study designs, differences in efficacy between treated and control groups, p values, durations of benefits, etc. I appreciate the need to avoid overwhelming the general reader, but oversimplifying descriptions of studies is also a problem, since it increases the risk of misinterpretation.
4. Challem doesn't adequately describe the side effects and risks associated with supplements, including interactions with each other and with conventional medicines, especially when supplements are taken in relatively high doses. The point needs to be emphasized that supplements aren't entirely risk free, and therefore need to be used carefully.
5. Challem often doesn't provide sufficient details on how supplements should be taken with respect to taking them with or without food, number of times per day, etc.
Overall, I do certainly recommend this book as a useful resource for prevention and treatment of inflammation-related health problems. However, readers should be aware of the book's limitations, and should therefore plan to also utilize other books and the advice of their doctors and other health advisors. This book by itself isn't sufficient for a "do it yourself" approach to treating serious health conditions, and I don't advise that approach anyway.
Also keep in mind that this book was published in 2003, so some revisions to its recommendations may be warranted based on subsequent research findings.
| | The Inflammation Syndrone by Beverly A. Oxenreiter (Dallas TX USA) 5 Stars May 27, 2009 So far so good, haven't finished reading book but experience with Amazon was great. Would definitely order from vendor again.
| | Do yourself a favor and buy The china study instead by Hardware Addict (Shreveport, LA) 1 Stars March 15, 2009 If you really want to read a book by a scientist that revolutionized the field of nutrition, don't read this; read "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell. It will make your head spin. The 30-year study conducted by international researchers more than makes the case against animal protein and milk. Nowhere does Challem's book even mention studies about the increased incidence of Type 1 diabetes among children who drink milk.
I wouldn't waste time reading Challem's book. It's outdated and based on shady science.
