Lacks explanation by TP (Oradell, NJ, USA) 2 Stars
January 31, 2006
This book appears to be useful, but in reality, it isn't. The formulas are given without stating their inherent assumptions and limitations. Somewhere in the book the author states: "for an overconsolidated clay, cohesion is greater than zero; for a normally consolidated clay, it is zero." No further explanation. This is a "cookbook" type of text, perfectly suited for today's mediocrity infested mentality: grind thru a formula and produce some numbers, fast. To that end, it's a great book. My sincere recommendation to the author: double the size of the book, and turn it into an insightful, meaningful, useful book.

Steel Design

Steel Design
by William T. Segui (Author)

Steel Design covers the fundamentals of structural steel design with an emphasis on the design of members and their connections, rather than the integrated design of buildings. Not only is Steel Design a revision of LRFD Steel Design, it also encompasses the 2005 unification of LRFD and ASD as is covered in the Steel Construction Manual. The book is designed so that instructors can easily teach either LRFD or ASD, or both, time-permitting, as the differences in the two approaches are...

Structural Steel Design (4th Edition)
by Jack C. McCormac (Author)

The material is presented in a clear, reader-friendly style. This best-selling text has been fully updated to conform to the latest American Manual of Steel Construction. Both Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) are now covered and calculations are worked out side-by-side to allow for easy identification of the different methods. Use of SI units as an addition to the primary use of Inch-Pound units. New coverage of Lateral Torsional Bending and...

Principles of Geotechnical Engineering

Principles of Geotechnical Engineering
by Braja M. Das (Author)

Intended as an introductory text in soil mechanics, the seventh edition of Das, PRINCIPLES OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING offers an overview of soil properties and mechanics together with coverage of field practices and basic engineering procedure. PRINCIPLES OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING contains more figures and worked out problems than any other text on the market and provides the background information needed to support study in later design-oriented courses or in professional practice.

Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design (5th Edition)

Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design (5th Edition)
by James K. Wight (Author), James G. MacGregor (Author)

Reinforced concrete design encompases both the art and science of engineering. This book presents the theory of reinforced concrete as a direct application of the laws of statics and mechanics of materials. In addition, it emphasizes that a successful design not only satisfies design rules, but also is capable of being built in a timely fashion and for a reasonable cost. A multi-tiered approach makes Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design an outstanding textbook for a variety of university...

Design of Reinforced Concrete

Design of Reinforced Concrete
by Jack C. McCormac (Author), Russell Brown (Author)

With its accessible approach and streamlined coverage of theory, engineers will quickly learn how to apply the concepts in the eighth edition. The contents have been updated to conform to the 2008 building code of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-08). New spreadsheets are included that arm the reader with tools to analyze and design reinforced concrete elements and quickly compare alternative solutions. A new chapter on seismic design explores the issues related to the design of...
