This is the best book for manufacturing tech. details and the uses of different materials. Highly recommended! This has step-by-step pictures for the manufacturing processes. Very clear and easy to understand.

Just to echo what the other reviewers are saying here: it's hard to imagine a design shop without this book on the shelf. And at the price, it's within the budget of most product design and engineering students as well. I first encountered this book two years ago, and actually thought the price was a misprint. Just as the Amazon review says, this is really an encyclopedia of manufacturing processes, lavishly illustrated, lots of examples, and at a great price. What's not to like?

A great design book for insiders! No coffee table album for amateurs. Recommended as substitute for pornography. The only problem I had - it is too physically heavy for reading in the lavatory... enjoy!

I absolutely love this book. I wish I had it while I was in undergrad. My friend found it and shared it with me; then I bought myself a copy. When I showed it at work (I work in consumer product development), we bought two copies for the office.
This is an excellent book because:
It is well-organized. You can use it as a reference, or read it like a novel. There are two main sections: processes and materials. Processes is further broken into Forming, Cutting, Joining, and Finishing functions.
It is modern- it was first published in 2007.
Each processes illustrated has a table with bullet lists with the important information about the process. (on the "Blow Molding" process, it shows "Costs, typical applications, suitability, quality, related processes, and speed".
Each process has drawing illustrating the process and a case study.
Really, this is a great book, for anyone in the product development industry.

This is a phenomenal resource. I bought this book as a required text for a materials and processes class and it is likely the best textbook I own. Easy, color-coded reference, full-color glossy images, and up-to date (for 2008) processes. Not only does it give easily understandable descriptions of the actual manufacturing processes, but it goes on to give typical applications, related processes, quality considerations, design opportunities and considerations, compatible materials, costs, and environmental impacts for every material and process in the book! It also gives case studies of actual products that exemplify many of the products covered. This is a comprehensive resource that I'll own and use for a long time.
