EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description This book is concerned with the ionosphere and the magnetosphere, and the theory of their effect on radio waves. It includes accounts of some mathematical topics now widely used in this study, particularly W. K. B. approximations, Airy integral functions and integration by steepest descents. The subject is divided into ray theory and full wave theory. Ray theory is useful for high frequencies when the ionosphere is treated as a horizonally stratified medium. The discussion of the magnetosphere, whose structure is more complicated, includes an account of whistlers and ion cyclotron whistlers. The book has been planned both for final year undergraduates and as a reference book for research. It is suitable as a course book on radio propagation for students of physics or electrical engineering or mathematics. Some of the topics are presented from an elementary viewpoint so as to help undergraduates new to the subject. The later parts are more advanced. Because the subject is so large and has seen many important recent advances, some topics have had to be treated briefly, but there is a full bibliography with about 600 references. |

| Ionospheric Radio (IEE Electromagnetic Waves Series, Vol. 31) (Ieee Electromagnetic Waves Series) by Kenneth Davies (Author)
This volume presents an up-to-date survey of the theory and practice of radio wave propagation involving transmission through and reflection from the ionosphere. A brief historical introduction is followed by such topics as radio techniques, plasma theory, oblique transmission, earth-space, amplitude, ionospheric disturbances, ELF, VLF and LF, medium waves, HF and VHF. The work will benefit radio engineers whose systems are affected by the ionosphere, researchers and graduate students studying...

| Propagation of Radiowaves, 2nd Edition (Electromagnetic Waves) by Les W. Barclay (Author)
The field of radio communications continues to change rapidly and the second edition of this outstanding book, based on a popular IEE Vacation School, has been fully updated to reflect the latest developments. The introduction of new services and the proliferation of mobile communications have produced a growing need for wider bandwidths and the consequent need for frequency reuse. This book introduces the basic concepts and mechanisms of radiowave propagation engineering in both the...

| Ionospheres: Physics, Plasma Physics, and Chemistry (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series) by Robert W. Schunk (Author), Andrew F. Nagy (Author)
Ionospheres provides a comprehensive description of the physical, plasma and chemical processes controlling the behavior of ionospheres. The relevant transport equations and related coefficients are derived in detail and their applicability and limitations are described. Relevant wave processes are outlined and important ion chemical processes and reaction rates are presented. The various energy deposition and transfer mechanisms are described in some detail, and a chapter is devoted to the...

| The High-latitude Ionosphere and its Effects on Radio Propagation by R. D. Hunsucker (Author), J. K. Hargreaves (Author)
This book presents a modern treatment of the physics and phenomena of the high latitude upper atmosphere and the morphology of radio propagation in the auroral and polar regions. Chapters cover the basics of radio propagation and the use of radio techniques in ionospheric studies. Many investigations of high latitude radio propagation have previously only been published in Conference Proceedings and organizational reports. This book also includes many examples of the behavior of quiet and...

| A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations by Daniel Fleisch (Author)
Gauss's law for electric fields, Gauss's law for magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law are four of the most influential equations in science. In this guide for students, each equation is the subject of an entire chapter, with detailed, plain-language explanations of the physical meaning of each symbol in the equation, for both the integral and differential forms. The final chapter shows how Maxwell's equations may be combined to produce the wave equation, the basis for the...
