Product Description
The endothelium, the cell layer that forms the inner lining of blood vessels, is a spatially distributed system that extends to all reaches of the human body. Today, clinical and basic research demonstrates that the endothelium plays a crucial role in mediating homeostasis and is involved in virtually every disease, either as a primary determinant of pathophysiology or as a victim of collateral damage. Indeed, the endothelium has remarkable, though largely untapped, diagnostic and therapeutic potential. This volume endeavors to bridge the bench-to-bedside gap in endothelial biomedicine, with the goal of advancing research and development and improving human health. The book is the first to systematically integrate knowledge about the endothelium from different organ-specific disciplines, including neurology, pulmonary, cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, infectious disease, hematology-oncology, nephrology, and dermatology. Moreover, it is unique in its interdisciplinary approach, drawing on expertise from such diverse fields as evolutionary biology, comparative biology, molecular and cell biology, mathematical modeling and complexity theory, translational research, and clinical medicine.

Methods in Endothelial Cell Biology (Springer Lab Manuals)

Methods in Endothelial Cell Biology (Springer Lab Manuals)
by Hellmut G. Augustin (Editor)

Endothelial cell biology has developed into a vibrant discipline and has become a critical instrument to study several disease processes on the cellular and molecular level. It is now widely recognized that dysfunctions of normal endothelial cell homeostasis are involved in some of the most important human diseases, including ischemic heart diseases, hypertension, atherosclerosis, tumors, diabetes, arthritis, and inflammation. Further, the increasing importance and recognition of...

Cellular Signal Processing: An Introduction to the Molecular Mechanisms of Signal Transduction

Cellular Signal Processing: An Introduction to the Molecular Mechanisms of Signal Transduction
by Friedrich Marks (Author), Ursula Klingmüller (Author), Karin Müller-decker (Author)

Cellular Signal Processing presents the essential concepts underlying cell signaling. It is based on a unifying principle that traces cell signaling to biochemical switching reactions that link protein-protein interactions with energy production. Designed for use by undergraduate and graduate students in cell biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology courses, as well as medical students, it examines the cell as a data processing unit in which the proteins form an extremely complex and...

Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Mechanisms in Obesity, Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome (Oxidative Stress and Disease)

Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Mechanisms in Obesity, Diabetes, and the Metabolic Syndrome (Oxidative Stress and Disease)
by Lester Packer (Editor), Helmut Sies (Editor)

Characterized by obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, metabolic syndrome is associated with the risks of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Obesity, which increases the incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and subsequently leads to increased stress and inflammation, appears to play a central role in the progression of the syndrome. Evidence of inflammatory processes in accumulated fat appears to be an early initiator of metabolic...

by Vinay Kumar (Author), Nelso Fausto (Author), Abul Abbas (Author)

Through six editions, Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease has been the leading textbook in its field. No other resource has been able to match its outstanding coverage of pathophysiology and disease. Now renamed Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, the new, 7th Edition of this classic text delivers a host of improvements that make it an even clearer choice for students and practitioners!

Molecular Biology of the Gene (6th Edition)

Molecular Biology of the Gene (6th Edition)
by James D. Watson (Author), Tania A. Baker (Author), Stephen P. Bell (Author), Alexander Gann (Author), Michael Levine (Author), Richard Losick (Author), Inglis CSHLP (Author)

Though completely up-to-date with the latest research advances, the Sixth Edition of James D. Watson’s classic book, Molecular Biology of the Gene retains the distinctive character of earlier editions that has made it the most widely used book in molecular biology. Twenty-two concise chapters, co-authored by six highly respected biologists, provide current, authoritative coverage of an exciting, fast-changing discipline. Mendelian View of the World, Nucleic Acids...
