Product Description
The analysis of protein-protein interactions is fundamental to the understanding of cellular organization, processes, and functions. Recent large-scale investigations of protein-protein interactions using such techniques as two-hybrid systems, mass spectrometry, and protein microarrays have enriched the available protein interaction data and facilitated the construction of integrated protein-protein interaction networks. The resulting large volume of protein-protein interaction data has posed a challenge to experimental investigation. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the computational methods available for the analysis of protein-protein interaction networks. It offers an in-depth survey of a range of approaches, including statistical, topological, data-mining, and ontology-based methods. The author discusses the fundamental principles underlying each of these approaches and their respective benefits and drawbacks, and she offers suggestions for future research.

by Volkhard Helms (Author)

"This volume contains succinct, yet clear, descriptions of each of these topics and is best suited for readers who are delving into these concepts for the first time." -The Quarterly Review of Biology, 2009

This textbook provides an ideal introduction to computational cell biology for students of biology and bioinformatics. In particular the text focuses on a network-based approach to the study of cellular systems. Almost 30 carefully designed study exercises offer excellent support...

Complex Social Networks (Econometric Society Monographs)

Complex Social Networks (Econometric Society Monographs)
by Fernando Vega-Redondo (Author)

The book provides a systematic and self-contained account of the fast-developing theory of complex social networks. Social networks are central to the understanding of most socio-economic phenomena in the modern world. The classical approach to studying them relies on a methodology that abstracts from their size and complexity. In contrast, the approach taken in this book keeps complexity at the core, whilst integrating it with the incentive considerations that are preeminent in traditional...

Systems Biology: Properties of Reconstructed Networks

Systems Biology: Properties of Reconstructed Networks
by Bernhard O. Palsson (Author)

Genome sequences are now available that enable us to determine the biological components that make up a cell or an organism. The new discipline of systems biology examines how these components interact and form networks, and how the networks generate whole cell functions corresponding to observable phenotypes. This textbook describes how to model networks, determine their properties, and relate these to phenotypic functions. Some knowledge of linear algebra and biochemistry is required, since...

An Introduction to Systems Biology: Design Principles of Biological Circuits (Chapman & Hall/CRC Mathematical & Computational Biology)
by Uri Alon (Author)

Thorough and accessible, this book presents the design principles of biological systems, and highlights the recurring circuit elements that make up biological networks. It provides a simple mathematical framework which can be used to understand and even design biological circuits. The textavoids specialist terms, focusing instead on several well-studied biological systems that concisely demonstrate key principles.

Social and Economic Networks

Social and Economic Networks
by Matthew O. Jackson (Author)

Networks of relationships help determine the careers that people choose, the jobs they obtain, the products they buy, and how they vote. The many aspects of our lives that are governed by social networks make it critical to understand how they impact behavior, which network structures are likely to emerge in a society, and why we organize ourselves as we do. In Social and Economic Networks, Matthew Jackson offers a comprehensive introduction to social and economic networks, drawing on the...
